Find someone that installs PPG or Pilkington (same as PPG AFAIR), they were the best the last time I checked, I could hear a rock hit one of their shields and would not find a scratch.

Bruce @ Mr. Autoglass hooked me up a while back. He even let me choose from a few sets of glass, all worked through my insurance too.

If your insurance company will pay for OEM glass, make sure the company you choose will install OEM stuff. A lot of places will just get you the cheapest glass possible as your insurance is paying for it. I have always used Reliable Autoglass as they have always given me OEM glass.

What's wrong with safelite? I've used them before without any issue.

Thread necro

Called Bruce (from above post) to initiate windshield replacement, and while I would still like to go to a respected replacement company, I want to ask for an elaboration of some of the previous posts (ie- SafeLite)

Details:
  • I am insured through USAA
  • I have to initiate the claim before going to Mr Autoglass (Bruce)
  • Mr Autoglass doesn't have OEM, but states they use Pilkington
  • USAA uses SafeLite exclusively, unless I jump through MANY hoops
  • Speed is of the essence- Inspection due by end of month
Is SafeLite really borked? Looking for a few updated/recent opinions. This is the first time I've had to replace, but USAA already has a "Report only" note on my account from when I got the rock ding a few months ago.

For your troubles...

Inspection? For what? We don't have inspection out here, emissions is only emissions testing, nothing else.

The only time you need to have a vehicle inspected is when you bring one from out of state or you register it after being salvage title.

If anything its just a level 1 inspection where they check the vin on the car and title to make sure it matches.

This is pretty much what happened last year when I initially applied for AZ plates. (moved here from NC)

This will be my first emissions. I (mistakenly?) assumed that the tech would do a basic safety check, and the cracked windshild would be a no-go.

The only thing they do out here is check your emissions at the emissions place. It's not like back east where you have to get everything check out everytime.

The only thing they check is that the scanner says your obdII is okay.

Unless you have a 95 or older car then they do the sniffer test. check the gs cap and evap system and inspect under the hood for all emissions equipment and loose vacuum hoses.

You can go in there with cords showing on your tires and all you lights broken out, all they do is test for emssions.

Yeah, normally you don't, but sometimes it depends on the current state of the title and what state it comes from.

Basically I don't think you need an uncracked windshield unless you are getting a Level III inspection, the priority is to check the lights and and VINs, but you only need that when you turn a salvage title vehicle into restored salvage or if a vehicle has been in a collision or recovered stolen.
