Default Installation of '05 STi gauge cluster into '05 WRX

For those wondering if its possible and how to do it, here it is.

If you aren't able to find one for sale in the classifieds, you'll need to order the parts from the dealership. I didn't know, but apparently the cluster doesn't come pre-assembled. You will need to order the individual components and assemble the cluster yourself. Total cost is close to $560, but I had some subaru bucks and that helped a lot.

Pieces you'll need:
Main Assembly - P/N: 85021FE170
Window Plate - P/N: 85070FE120

Glass - P/N: 85075FE000

Visor - P/N: 85057FE000

Knob Kit - P/N: 85077FE030

For assembly, you install the knob kit (yes, you have to buy the shift light adjustment knob separately) into the Main Assembly. You then lay the Window Plate over the top. Next, snap the Glass onto the Visor assembly. Once this is done, carefully set the Glass / Visor assembly over the two knobs and then clip it into place onto the Main Assembly. Voila, you have an assembled cluster.

From there, follow these instructions to install the cluster. You do NOT need to cut the B28 wire (yellow w/ pale green). Cutting that wire is what causes the ABS light to come on. I reconnected it this morning, drove all day, and saw no other issues arise from it still being attached. You do still need to cut the orange w/ white wire on the right plug.

The major difference is the left connector. The directions say to file down the tab on the cluster. Due to the shape and alignment of the connector, I found it easiest to simply use a pair of cutters and remove two of the tabs from the connector...see below.

When you're done, you get a working cluster that doesn't buzz / beep. The Rear Diff light is the only one that'll stay on because you have no rear diff temp sensor. For those of us with '05 and newer cars, the exterior temp sensor does function!

Hope this is helpful, enjoy.

With a set of MadDad Clarity V2 Ti gauges in the center pod.

Now that you're done, go back into the kitchen and make yourself a sammich. I recommend one of these:

Mmmmmm....grilled chicken, fresh mozzarella, lettuce, and a homemade pesto mayonnaise all on some fresh garlic and cheese bread.

His mileage count will read starting at "0". So now if today he drives for 500 miles. The cluster will read "500". Not the actual mileage he had on the car.

So isn't that technically illegal?

Yes, unless you get the mileage changed professionally by a company such as tacomaspeedometer.com.
- You send them the new cluster and have it set to the mileage to match the actual hours on the engine. And in order to make it legal they give you stickers (to put in the doorsill I believe) indicating the cluster change on the car.

Otherwise if you buy the new cluster from the dealer and have them install it I believe it's legal because the installation is done by the certified dealership and the changes will be documented.

So what, do we buy the parts and assemble it ourselves and then bring it to the dealer and have it installed to make it legal?

I'm sure if you buy it from the dealer and tell them you want them to install it for you they will assemble it also.

When you buy new wheels/tires from discount tire or belle tire do you buy them, take them home and mount the tires yourself then take it back to have the wheels put on the car? Come on....

You are correct. My mileage did start at zero with the new cluster, but I did take note of the original mileage when I swapped it and recorded it on the back of the new cluster with a date. I talked to the dealer, and the do not have the ability to adjust the mileage on the gauge clusters. You have to find a shop to do that separately. There is a local shop, but they moved recently and I need to find them again to have it done.

Update on install - the B28 wire that is supposed to be cut (yellow w/ pale green) does not need to be cut on an '05. Cutting that wire is what makes the ABS light come on. I reattached the wires, the light went off, and I have yet to see any other malfunctions from it.

Sorry to bring this back from the dead, but from what I read in your initial post, the external temperature function will work on the 05 wrx without having to connect a sensor?

Correct. Part of the automatic climate control setup on the '05 and newer models is an external thermometer. No need to fabricate / install a separate one.

You might try subarugenuineparts.com. They are based out of a Subaru dealership, so I have a feeling Jamie can get you the temp sensor unit. Where you connect it or how you wire it up are questions I can't answer. Hopefully you can figure those ones out.

you will need the auto HVAC on the newer wrx for the outside temp to work. If you have manual HVAC (ex. TR models) the outside temp does NOT work. Ppl are still working on fixing that, but haven't been figured out yet. Other than that, everything works perfectly.
