Headlight auto shutoff
I don't see anything about this in the headlight section of the manual. Anyone know how the headlight auto shutoff works on these cars? If you're driving and leave the lights on when you get out, do the lights turn off immediately when you pull the key? Do they go off after a certain amount of time? If they are bumped on after pulling the key will they ever automatically shut off or will it allow them to drain the battery?
I don't rely on the auto shutoff, but I'm just curious about how they work on this car.

Stalk
Only Limited and Sport have it. It is on the stalk. See these pics, they showcase it. Notice the Auto mark on the upper right picture.

Yes. Like every subaru I've ever seen since the early 90's, the lights turn off with the key no matter the switch setting.
This simple idea is so brilliant I don't know why other manufacturers don't do it as well. |

^ I agree.
The only time I have to switch it off auto is when its raining sometimes its too bright for the lights to go on so I have to put them on manually. One of my favorite simple features. |

From what I've seen and heard though, Subaru's implementation of the auto-feature isn't that great. |

Some people seem to be talking about the feature that comes on some trim levels where the headlights turn on and off depending on how bright it is outside.
Other people seem to be talking about the feature on all of our cars, where the headlights automatically turn off when you remove the key. Since I have a base model, I'll explain how the latter feature works: The headlights automatically switch off when you turn off the car. So, if I'm driving around with my headlights on, and then I park and remove the key, the headlights immediately turn off. I think it's when you remove the key, but I'm not certain. If I want the headlights to be on when the car's off, I can just switch them off and on again. They'll stay on until I choose to switch them back off, or until I turn the car on and off again. I've just gotten in the habit of leaving the lights on all the time. Even though they aren't necessary during the day, they still help other drivers see me. |

As a couple of you caught, I was referring to a safety shutoff to keep the headlights from draining the battery if you forget to turn them off, not an auto on/off position.
Thanks for the replies. |

I'm lazy, and this will only cause me to be lazy-er. I shudder to think of the next poor rental vehicle that I kill the battery with by leaving the lights on. |

only limited's do the "auto-off" in question is just when you forget to turn off your headlights (guilty! I have been spoiled by vehicles with auto on/off for years!) and you switch your key off, the lights also turn off |

I have the base and I'm somewhat confused by how the lights work as well.
The manual states that when the "off" is selected on the stalk, all headlights are off but this isn't true. I notice when the engine is on, the DRL are lit. So my question is, if I left the stalk on "off" and let the DRL turn itself on when the engine is on, do I not need to worry about it during the day? That way you don't need to worry about forgetting to switch them off. Is everything lit properly when the engine is on? It does seem like the lights are turned off when the engine is off but if the lights are "on", the instrument panel is still lit so that would drain the battery as well. |

DRL is not a headlight and are designed to be always on - unless the park/headlights are engaged. The DRL and Park/Headlights will turn off when the car is off and the keys are removed. The light in the instrument panel should also turn off when the key is removed - except for the blinking light for the "alarm".

Also, the backlighting of the instrument panel does not turn off when the engine is off, if the headlight setting is still set to on. I have verified this. You can see it when it is dark. |

If you have the headlight switch set to "off", then you have no reason to touch it unless you want your headlights on. If you have the headlights switched on, there's still no need to touch the switch, because they'll turn themselves off as soon as you remove the key. That is, unless you switch them on after removing the key. |

I was wrong. The instrument panel does turn off after the key is removed. I must have turned it back on after the key was already removed when testing.
