Default Calling UTEC users...

For those of you out there with UTECs, could you check your log files and see if your MAP values fluctuate up and down??

I'm using a Blitz SBC-iD and the guage reads quite stable boost all the way through 3rd and 4th gear but my UTEC datalogs show a rise and fall from 18psi all the way down to 14psi in some cases.

Here is a link to the excel file showing the issue: http://24.79.147.156/utec/logs/utec8_hwy14.xls

Here is the raw datalog: http://24.79.147.156/utec/logs/utec8_hwy14.txt

Look at your Mod IGN column and then look at that RPM range in your map. I think you had knock and the UTEC backed the timing out on you, also dropping boost slightly. Thats my guess...

Scoobie,

What Map are you running, specifics. It looks a little leaner than our latest version "VF30STG4TMIA."

Check yours against this: Edit: some of the data below is missing in the cut and paste so do not copy this into your UTEC. Here is the link to the complete map http://www.turboxs.com/images/UTEC/stg4tmia.txt

I just noticed the wrxhackers.com has the wrong map under STG4. We will have them change it tomorrow.

Thanks,
Phil

I'll give this one a try. Thanks Phil.

My only question is though, my FJO is reading 10.0:1 at WOT from 3300--->redline with the map included with my UTEC. Since the timing between each has not changed wouldn't this yeild even MORE rich conditions?

Btw, the map mine came with has the following comments/etc:

Map Name:-[VF30 STG4TMIBLTZAF]
Map Comments:-[VF30 STI injectors]

....would this "lean map" have any bearing on my fluctuating MAP values? I'll be giving the TXS ABC a try tomorrow (disconnecting my Blitz SBC-iD).

p.s. Phil, have a look at this other post too: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...hreadid=256763

I hear ya....but check this out:

5767 +17.0 4.3 99 90 00 rich +21.1 93.0 +23.0 -6.5 42.50 4.0

There is no rational explanation for the drop from 16.8psi to 13.5psi then back up to 17.0 again (timing is consistent).

The MAP signal does fluctuate and is particularly noticable once you get onto boost. This is because the MAP sensor is fast enough to detect fluctuation within the manifold. The air flow and pressure within a manifold is not constant due to the opening and closing of valves, turbo fluctuations etc. The UTEC uses a short averaged MAP for load points but the data in the loggers is the faster reacting MAP signal.

The faster data was primarily used by us for analysing boost controller performance.

Boost gauges generally provide an averaged reading however some gauges will show a vibrating needle indicating a pulsating pressure within the manifold.

For the next revision of software we have used a longer averaged MAP signal for various functions including the loggers. The loggers will then produce a "smooth" MAP curve similiar to that displayed on your boost gauge.

Thanks Pete.

So could the fluctuations cause a feeling of hesitation while on full boost? The load site in the datalogs show a change from 100% down to 70%, then back up to 90% etc...

Just curious ScoobieSnaX. You mentioned that you go richer than 10:1 or peg 10:1 on your FJO. I did the SAME thing when I first got the UTEC because I forgot to switch the manual switch to map 1 from map 0. Map 0 being just the stock ECU so the car pretty much falls on it's face rich once you get into boost.

Just a thought... I was used to tuning the Link which only had one map in there at a time .

Ya, I made sure I was on map1 before I installed it. There was a yellow "sticky" on the unit indicating map1 was "stage4". After connecting with my laptop I noticed this to be true...

I also get one flash of the CEL when I turn on the ignition...

.....back to my original question/request....

Could someone post their datalogs just for comparison?? I'd like to see this behaviour on someone elses car too...

I just thought about something......

Could a BOV cause this condition if it was'nt tight enough? I have a turbosmart BOV which is adjustable.

The BOV might cause it, but it's hard to say without have a look at the car.

What version of utec software are you running?

2.2 or 2.2a? Check the upper right hand corner of the utec "home" page.

If the hesitation you are speaking about occurred on the run that you showed in your datalog, it was caused by the UTEC pulling timing in the 5600-6000rpm range. Dropping from 23 degrees to 15 degrees and back to 23 degrees in a matter of 200-300 rpm will cause a noticeable hesitation (by design!).

Since your FJO says you are running rich, I would take out 1 degree of timing from 5500 to 6000 rpm and see if the knock goes away. If it does, you may be able to lean the car back out to 10.5-10.7:1 on pump gas (as long as knock does not return). If it does not (and you are sure you are rich) take out another 0.5 degree and keep going.

A BOV opening and closing under boost will also cause a surging, but this is an unlikely event. It should be easy enough to replace the BOV with the stocker, however and rule this out. In any case, you need to get your WRX running knock free first through some tuning.
