2010 WRX with a Knock? What to do?!?!?!
I have a 2010 WRX with exactly 33k miles on it. I wont sugar coat this... I have driven the car hard.
I modded it with: Invidia Turbo Back exhaust Electronic Boost Controller GrimmSpeed GrimmSpeed Up-Pipe w/38mm EWG Port 38mm Tial EWG Cobb Short Ram Intake One Step Colder Plugs P+L Motorsports Custom Tune Sometimes when I rev it and hold it at 1300-1700 RPM's you can hear a very noticeable LOUD knock seemingly coming from under the inter-cooler. If you rev fast from 1-3k no knock at all. The knock is intermittent... which would make more sense with a rattle? I'm terrified to take it to Subaru cause they will probably laugh it out the door it came in through. BTW the car drives fine. No power loss, and no check engine light. I need advice...thanks!

Was it ever driven low on oil? Possibly a rod bearing? Try and find a video that has a similar noise.

Well i just checked the oil. I had an oil change done 3k miles ago... the motor was bone dry on synthetic subaru oil done by the dealer. they said it was due back for oil at 36k so i still had 3k miles to go according to them. I added some royal purple and the noise went away... I walked behind the car to see oil all over my driveway from the exhaust. It took 4 quarts to fill it just above the high mark on the dip stick... my oil light never came on either... im furious atm... ill upload the video of the noise and the pic of the oil...

Start researching a rebuild...and realize that your failure to do something as simple as checking the oil once a week is going to cost you $$$. |

That motor is hurt. Keep driving it and it will break and cause even more damage. Stop driving it and start looking into getting it rebuilt ASAP. Also, I cannot even IMAGINE why the car would be 4 quarts low on oil after 3000 miles. Did they mistakenly put 5w20 in it or something? No low oil light came on? sounds fishy to me.

No low oil light. I doubt they put the wrong oil in. Im upset over it. Should I even try to warranty it? I just came in from the garage and im putting stock all back on. which is like a big puzzle.

CHECK YOUR DAMN OIL ONCE IN A WHILE! Edit: Bad luck you started losing oil, and didn't notice before it completely ran out, but don't blame the dealer. If it's something they did, it would have happened long before you got to 3k in this oil change. Put it back to stock, and try for the warranty. Last edited by Bacon117; 04-02-2012 at 05:59 PM. |

I have researched this issue at GREAT LENGTH and I am convinced that using the WRONG OIL is responsible for the vast majority of these engine failures. |

It's funny that someone could probably post here asking if running 5W-20 in a WRX was ok and people would think they were nuts. Fact is, a Resource Conserving oil will shear to a 20 weight very quickly so there really isn't any difference since 5W-20's are very stable. -Dennis Last edited by bluesubie; 04-02-2012 at 10:30 PM. |

I drive my Scooby very hard and I am beyond stage 2 power levels. I run T6 and check the oil every 1000 miles or so. At most I have to add about 1/8 of a Qt. after about 1000-2000 miles. I run my T6 to about 5000-6000 miles as well depending on how I have driven the car. My car has 20K+ HARD miles and its running like a champ.
I cannot even fathom how a car gets 4 QTs low on oil and not noticed. There would be a difference in how the car runs, power, noise, and operating temperature. Even when I was a noob and ran Mobil1 5w30 in my 2010 WRX I saw it 1/2 QT low after 1000 miles and after 3750 miles noticed that adding 2.5 QTs of oil over time was not right. I changed to T6 and never burned oil like that again. In fact I am using oil, not burning oil, but most subies use a little oil. 4QTs blows my mind. |

Subaru chose to recommended 5W30 to satisfy the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) EPA rule enacted by congress in the 70's. The STi just misses paying the gas guzzler tax at the EPA rating of 23 highway. A vehicle must obtain 22.5 MPG to avoid it. If the STi was tested at 21.5 - 22.4 MPG highway, a $1000 tax would be added to the car appearing on the sticker making it a reality Subaru wouldn't sell it in the U.S..
