Default Where'd The "My AVLS Broke" Thread Go?

Within the last year or so, we had a thread here about some guy's AVLS system breaking, making the valves not close, and how he fixed it. I can't find that thread and, lo and behold, there is a car sitting in my garage with that problem. Is anyone's search-fu better than mine?

What key words or phrases did you search with? I only ask so I don't replicate your fruitless results

AVLS stuck broke problem 2.5i valvetrain etc

Anyway, got it stripped down to the point I could feel that the rocker arm had clearance between it and the tops of the valves, which means that it wasn't an AVLS problem. So I got the guy to OK ripping off the head. Turns out that one exhaust valve smacked the piston and bent enough that it's not sealing. Ball's back in the guy's court to for him to decide if he wants to shell out the money to fix it. He owes too much on it to scrap it, but he's looking at a repair bill that's going to get close to what he owes on it. These days, ending up twice the value of the car upside-down on the loan isn't a great idea.

I have NO idea how the valve and the piston got together.

Look at the valve guides. I had a 2008 in for head gaskets a few weeks ago - 1 exhaust guide in #2 and 1 in #4 had started to drop. Got to it before they went too far.
