and remember everyone, the annual tech starts at 6pm not the 5:30 time listed. I know I mentioned it before but the service department is still open at 5:30.

Would you guys recommend having a dedicated set of wheel/tires for autoX?
I'm thinking about doing it anyways, but would like to hear that other people do that same thing.

Wider tires would be nice on the track so if you have the budget I would say yes but I think what you have is plenty until you fine tune yourself. Fancy stuff doesn't help until you learn how to use what you have.

Depends on how much work you want to do. Only if it was some sort of race compound would it be worth doing. ie some Hoosiers or similar. Otherwise, a waste of time.

try the sport first and then decide if you want to get a dedicated set of rims/tires.

if you like the sport and know you will make enough events to justify spending money on dedicated rims and tires. by all means do it.

This, I couldn't agree more with this. Start making it to more events, learn your new car with the tires that are on it. Figure out if you are gonna be able to make more events next year as well. If you can see yourself doing that and trying to keep racing then I suggest it. But not for this year

Great advice from everyone. Classing is SCCA based, something to keep in mind. The cars allowed in each class do not take into account the mods you may or may not have. It is one size fits all. Race compound tires are generally equal to about a second per run. There is a learning curve to using race compound rubber and that first run may not have the tires up to optimal temperature range. The large amount of competitors may be so big that the tires cool back down to suboptimal temps between subsequent runs. I think one or two people use race rubber to eek out that last second and pad their raw time placings. Otherwise Dunlop Star specs have great stickiness in dry conditions, okay traction in moist conditions. They also have great longevity vs. wear and their heat cycling vs. blistering is superb.

yeah doubtful I'll get slicks again for up here. your runs are spaced so far apart its hard to keep tires warm. unless you share your car and your tire fluffer does it for ya.

Can you clarify this statement for me?

I changed a turbo and as a result ran in SM, otherwise I would have been DS or STX.

Am I misreading what you're saying?

Kyle - get a set of Dunlop Star Specs and just run those for the summer and AX. If you're aligned right and watch the wear, they'll last 2 seasons.

And retrac swoops in with an opinion!

Run whatever you have until you learn the car, how to drive it smoothly and don't out drive the tires. You will burn through tires faster than you can imagine until you get those skills down, no sense doing it to an expensive set when you can learn on cheap ones. Learning to drive well on less... advantaged tires is good for your skills once you slap great tires on.

I saw mike get a lot of fast racing out of a set, and I saw dad go through a set of fronts in about 6 or 7 race days, that adds up fast!

^^^He speaks the truth. I wore out some cheaps too. And the front Star Specs was likely a camber issue I failed to pay attention to, hence the watching of the wear. You can't just set it and forget it. Things in front of your face hide easy. Driving the Glenn day in and out like that doesn't help much either.

But those Star Specs made quite a difference in sticking the car...maybe too good. They brought lots of smiles to my face and made Dad a happy boy.

Sorry BJ, I understand now that what I tried to say wasn't very clear.

The rules are very clear about what cars and what mods on them are allowed in the specific classes. They are designed to keep things straight for the guys at the national level where everyone builds their cars to the limit of the rules.

Some folks run street tires and only have a single mod (like you) that places them in a class designed for cars with tons of radical mods and race rubber. No distinction is made between them within the class. Its one size fits all per class.

NASA (National Auto Sport Association) rules change the pax multiplier based on each individual mod you perform including whether or not you run street rubber or race rubber.

Ah...had me worried. I thought I was running in SM for no reason. But I got 2nd place for the season. Out of 2. 1st loser to Henry.

By the way...I read up on NASA rules and I really like them. Much better than SCCAs for the exact reason you cited...my little VF43 mod to a plethora of mods pushing the rules limits.

I VOTE FOR NASA RULES!!!

Who's with me.

Clint and I tried to broach that subject last year. I think it would be great to make a clean break from Scca altogether AND make for better racing for everyone. It was shot down. I don't exactly know why the establishment is opposed to it. I would vote FOR it but this isn't a democracy. We are talking about 4 different clubs that run events together.

I haven't read the rules but the concept sounds difficult to regulate? After some research I will be better informed to form a educated opinion.

If you want that then go to where it is utilized. Please do not continue to DIS our group.

Another kuddos to the Star Specs....I ran a set on my heavy pig of a car for three seasons and then did an additional 40+ runs at Tanacross before they were done. Got my $$ worth of of them.
I need to buy another set for this season. Sponsors???

Didn't realize expressing an opinion was a "DIS" on the group, Jammer. I think Subzero and the other groups are great. That is why I am a member. It is where I choose to compete and support the sport with my dollars. I'm there no matter the rules. It is where the best racers come to compete. I agree with LiLpNoY, it would be hard to regulate. I suppose informing people that there is more than a single way of doing things is a no no.

Mike, buddy this is not the venu to have this conversation on, you as an up and coming PA need to know when and where it is appropiate to discuss a topic but your are still learning so I must give you some grace my apploigies,

now back to the game

I must say star specs are the best, so if you are investing go that direction rather then slicks

What establishment are you referring too? The handful of people who show up to the meetings consistantly or the handful of people who show up from each club at each event to set up at 6:30am?

We have been asking for volunteers and have been inviting people to meetings for the last 3 yrs and 3 people have taken us up on it... 3.

Unlike other meetings you may have attended, SZM meetings are casual, those in attendance get a chance to bring up new ideas, they are discussed, we go through our agenda and finish... usually within an hour or so.

We are running with current rules this season... not because this is not a democracy but because those of us who have been putting the series together feel this is working and we don't have time to do a revamp and pull all the events together this season.

I have never heard your concerns before and on at least 3 occassions I have tried to get you and several other people together.

Mike, this isn't the forum to bring this up... Next Thursday we are having an open membership meeting, 6:00 @ Conti Subaru, I would like to see you there. I would like to invite everyone interested in being part of the season to attend but be advised, we will be talking about volunteer positions and events at this first meeting not reinventing the wheel 3 weeks before the first event. Later meetings through out the Summer will be excellent opportunities to discuss 2013 scoring options and other ideas to make the 2013 points series even better.

If you want to discuss in more detail, please come to our next meeting or PM me.

Fellas, there is no sinister motive here. I am a passionate person and I speak my heart. That is ALL I was doing. I don't have a poker face and I'm not playing games. I am not trying to reinvent the wheel nor challenge the club officials. I can find the link where this very discussion happened before if no one believes it occurred.http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...highlight=nasa . You were actually both a part of the conversation.

I wasn't trying to sway anyone tonight. Just presenting that there were other alternatives to SCCA classing. People can think for themselves. The conversation was flowing in a direction. BJ asked for a clarification. I answered. Didn't feel I needed a new thread to do that. It wasn't intended to open a can of worms***8230;but here it is.

Whether I am becoming a PA or not has nothing to do with me having an opinion on something I feel strongly about. In retrospect, I realize that this occurring in the 2012 schedule thread could be taken the wrong way and apparently it has been by folks that I appreciate.

First I've heard of a open membership meeting at Conti Subaru, RALPH. I'll do my best to be there. It is something I care about. I also plan to be at the TECH on the 20th. I've already committed to helping with the events on multiple occasions this year. Turning in for the night.

I realize that you folks can't imagine the pressure I am under from my program but try to imagine 4 years of medical school condensed into a single year***8230;. Yet you still want a larger time commitment from me. I'll pay my member fee, pay my event fee and get in line, shag cones***8230;.whatever***8230;.if that is still allowed. Turning in for the night.

For the last 3 yrs. At very event we announce our meetings.

Ironically, we made the decision to have our first meeting of this season this afternoon, it just happened to coincide with your posts.
