Default lowered Legacy w/ Wrx wheels fitment issues?

Hello,
I noticed there are very knowledgeable people on this forum when it comes to subarus and I need some help.

I currently have 215/35/18's on my 95 Legacy L lowered by 1.5" using B&G springs and KYB GR2 struts.
I need to get wheels for winter so I am thinking about getting stock 02 WRX wheels with 205/55/16 tires.

Will I get perch/tire interference with my KYB struts and the 205/55/16 tires?

I would like to know if anyone has tried this combination and knows if it works.

I would find it hard to believe that if you're going from a 215 to a 205 you'll have any rubbing issues. Not to mention the wheel width on the stock wrx wheels is probably at least a half-inch narrower.

No issues whatsoever. That would probably be my choice too.

When I use a tire and wheel offset calculator, it says tht with the WRX wheels, the diameter of the wheels will be 1" bigger and the inside of the tire will be 5mm closer to the strut.
The calculations also show that the wheels will not rub against the fenders, but just by visually inspecting the clearance now with my 215/35/18 tires and the kyb strut perch, it looks like it will be a very very close fit.
It would suck to buy the wheels and then they don't fit

If the 16" WRX wheels wont work, no 16" will. They are THE ideal offset for our cars and identical to the Legacy GT wheels in size and offset.

The 16" WRX wheels with 205/55/16s will fit on my Legacy with stock struts.
I have read this in many forums.
However, I remember when I changed the stock struts to KYB GR2's, the KYB seemed a bit shorter. This is why I am wondering if the WRX wheels will fit and the inside of the tire will not rub on the strut perch...
If someone can confirm that the stock and KYB GR2s legacy struts are identical then I will have no problem.

I have 225/40R18 on +48 7.5" wheels on my wife's '97 GT. It's not lowered, but I've never had any clearance problems, even with a full load of passengers.

I believe the GR2s are a little bit shorter when fully extended. However, IIRC, they are the same size from the bottom of the strut to the lower spring perch so there shouldn't be a problem.

At this very moment my car is riding on KYB GR2s with WL control springs and the stock GT wheels w/ 205/55/16 Blizzak Revos. NO PROBLEMS.

End of story.

In my brief visual examination of the oem struts vs the GR-2s they appeared similar dimensionally, but now I wish I hadnt thrown my stock struts out. I just went out and checked and the rear clearence is quite close, I am running 16x7" +53mm RS wheels with 205/55-16 Kumho 712s.

As an extreme, Steve is running 225/40-18 Kumho 712s(taller and wider) on 18x7 +55mm wheels on his wagon:

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...highlight=spec

The problem with Steves setup for comparison is that hes running a quasi-oem strut and not a KYB.

You may be right in that the rear perches are closer on the KYBs, I have about 1/4" of strut/tire clearence in the rear now and these tires are beat. There's little doubt in my mind that if I tried to put on Steve's wheels/tires that I would be rubbing on the rear strut spring perches.

I still think you would have enough room for the 205/55-16s on 16x6.5" +55mm rims though.

Thanks for the clearance info.
I think you are right - it should work!

I'm not completely sure. Likely right around an inch or so. The lowering would have little to do with the rubbing on the spring perches, if I'm not mistaken. The only rubbing issue that lowering could induce would be on the fender liners.

Jared
Yep lowering isnt gonna affect the tire/strut clearance in the rear unless you install camber bolts and change the camber.
