EG33 weighs too much? Where did you hear that? 100 lbs. more, that's it.
It's longer than most H6s that's it. It's essentially a 2.2 engine with an extra row of pistons... |

The EG33 is a great engine. And you can get them *Cheap*. The guy I race with has I know at least 1 maybe 2 on the shelf for when this one goes.

That will be my next project. If I ever get my STi swap done, I'm going to find a 2 door and do an cammed up or blown EG33 build.

this is going to sound pretty stupid on my part but i really dont like the exhaust note of the eg33 and the ez30 is only 2 inches longer then an ej25......so i will feel more comfortable with the ez30r

as you wish.
The EZ30R is not a wonderful motor, though. |

There are a few different things you need to look into. I've been in the process of doing one for a few years, mostly getting everything else on my car ready for it but now it's finally done and i need buy one to start building this winter. You need to think about emissions requirements, what your plans are afterwords, if you are racing there could be class restrictions, also aftermarket parts and tuning will be different. I have a 04 rs and in Utah for me to pass emissions i need to have an engine the same year or newer. The EG33 in 92-96 is OBD I so that cause other obstacles, in 97 they switched to OBD II but it's the last year they made the EG so it's hard to find. The EZ30D is 00-04 and technically I can use any year engine but would need a 04+ ecu so when they do the OBD II test the ecu year is the same as the VIN on the car to pass emissions. The EZ30D is getting cheap and easier to find and is cable throttle so you don't have to worry about converting to the DBW. The EG33 is rated at 230 hp and has more options for building and tuning and is the cheapest but will require body modifications to fit and a custom radiator, people have used a 92 Saab 900 or a 90's jeep Cherokee one but most recommend a custom built. The EZ30D is rated at 220 hp and will fit without body modification and just slim fans and radiator hose trimming give it enough room. The EZ30R is rated at 245 hp and is DBW so you sill need convert to that but that isn't bad since you will have to have the matching ecu, wiring and immobilizers stuff so really it's just a gas pedal that is DBW and not cable. All have their benefits but you need to make sure you can pass emissions and decide on if you want to build it later. I'm still in the air on mine since i think i have a way around emissions so the EG is sounding better but I'll just keep looking and researching. Things might change and more support may come out for the EZ30R and maybe since they are getting older the price will come down. I just need more power now, my car is slow with the new 6-speed.

Can you explain why you think that? The added length means it is most definitely not the easiest to physically install in the engine bay. And the '01-04 EZ30 wouldn't be any harder than an EG33 to wire in, since you can use the factory ECU in either case. Quote:
Again, see the link I posted above. Wow, really bringin' the tech to this discussion! Quote:
The original '01-04 EZ30s were rated at 212hp and 210ft-lb. The '05 EZ30R was rated at 250hp and 219ft-lb. (Although peak torque was only 9ft-lb higher, the torque band was quite a bit wider. Somewhere I used to have the engine output curves from the respective brochures, but I can't find it now.) Note that the 212/210 and 250/219 ratings were using the same test procedure. In 2007 the EZ30R numbers dropped to 243hp and 215ft-lb when the testing methodology used throughout the automotive industry changed. That's actually a pretty good summary of things. A couple numbers are off, but close enough for government work. Pat Olsen |
