Rattles, road noise, and other strange noises
A lot of people ask me this so I thought I would do a mini FAQ.
Subaru's are known to be rattly cars, not necerssarily noisy, but enough rattles and squaks to make you think there's a tin duck in the back. Noise comes from lots of things; road noise, interior panels, chasis, engine, transmission, etc. That's helpful you think, well how do we fix it. 1. Stiffen the chasis 2. Switch tires 3. Switch suspension (struts, springs, or mounts) 4. Switch bushings Okay, so most people aren't going to switch all those parts out for softer and more compliant pieces just to get a 5-10dB drop for interior noise. Real world solutions. 1. Sound dampening material This can be many things Thicker carpet, asphalt or lead based materials, spray on acoustic foam, dampening foam, expanding foams, putty, calk. These come in many different forms: thin sheets, aerosal propelled, liquid, paste, putty, other. Some material to get designed for this are made by 1. Dynamat 2. Cascade Audio 3. Rockford 4. Kicker Prices vary on materials, the stuff above is professional grade If you have small rattles you can use stuff from hardware stores 1. 3m strip calk -generally used for sealant in windows, doors, etc. -great for automotive applications -putty like form molds and sticks to almost any metal or plastic surface 2. Expanding foam -generally used for filling holes, insulation -good for large or small cavities -downside is messy and care is needed so as not to overfill, difficult to remove 3. Door or window sealants, silicones -very messy but is good to stop interior panels from rubbing against each other and sealing small gaps or holes 4. Fill Material -generally foam or fill -pillow stuffing works well and cheap -good for small and large cavities -reduces small rattles Most of the hardware store products can help make your Soobie rattle a little less. Hunting down the rattles is the hardest part.
