Im glad i came across this....i went and ordered a filter for my car.....and when i went to take the old one out there was none?! I don't know if maybe 2002 didn't come with one but Im the second owner of the car and i doubt the lady who owned it before me took it out. It seems this filter they put baking soda in....i wonder if it will make the car smell fresher? Guess I'll find out next month when the new motor goes in

Cabin air filter was dealer option called "Air cleaning system" or something in that manner. It was priced at $75 or something like that.

Thanks for the info.....$75 back in 2002 for air filter.....i wouldn't have taken that option either lol. So I assume the filter is ok on top of the fan and there isn't a box or tray that it is supposed to sit on right?

It can't hurt to do it anyways....any car can be in nice shape but if they used the ac/heat much then its bound to be dirty. I use my ac/heat just about every time i drive the car.

Thanks for the great instructions. I replaced my filter today (after about 75,000 miles), and it was pretty disgusting!

dealership. if you want to PAY.
You could probably pull out the old one and match it up with an airfliter at the autoparts store, or make your own (I think they sell "cut your own" filter material at home depot/lowes for home furnaces)

I got a set (engine and cabin) off ebay for a good price.

When I replaced the filter in my old Saab (180k miles and probably the original filter) it looked like that or worse. Fan worked better and air did smell better afterward.

I will definitely be changing mine now...
Or adding it apparently... I wonder if there is even one in there.
I've seen Febreeze interior filters and Baking soda ones as well.
I'll probably go with one of those.

Cost me $80 at dealer! We also had rodents hanging out in our engine compartments until I left dryer sheets around the inner fenders - I guess critters don't like the clean smell.

I've heard of plenty of people who have done this with no problems.

I just bought one from subaru the other day... At 90k, It was pretty nasty

Took about 15 minutes in the dark with my phone flashlight and a screwdriver. Don't really even need to disconnect any wires if you just carefully hold them out of the way when pulling the filter out/putting the new one in. Not sure about the mileage on this one.
