Default man sentenced to 5 years in prison for slamming brakes in front of cyclists.

Quote:
Judge sends message to aggressive drivers
A judge in Los Angeles today sentenced 60-year-old Christopher Thompson to five years in prison for assaulting two cyclists in a 2008 road rage incident.
Thompson was convicted of mayhem, assault with a deadly weapon and other charges stemming from the run-in with the riders on Mandeville Canyon road in Brentwood.
The former emergency room physician admitted on the scene that he slammed on the brakes in front of the cyclists on purpose in order to "teach them a lesson".
The district attorney was inundated by letters from around the world by cyclists who urged the court to pass down a sentence that would send the message to drivers that they need to share the road with bicyclists.
"It is time that motorists learn that they must share the road with people on bicycles and that the courts will view assaults on cyclists by motorists as seriously as other assaults with deadly weapons," Deputy District Attorney Mary Hanlon Stone wrote in court papers.
Thompson said in court that he and other fellow residents of the narrow dead-end road were upset that cyclists rode side by side and ran stop signs along the road.
He exchanged words with two riders, Ron Peterson and Christian Stoehr, on July 4, 2008 before passing them and suddenly slamming on his brakes. Peterson went into the car's rear window and suffered broken teeth, cuts and had to have his nose reattached. Stoehr also hit the car and crashed.
According to reports, Thompson was in tears during the sentencing, and expressed remorse to Peterson and two other cyclists who had previously been harassed by Thompson on the same road.
The five-year sentence is half the maximum which could have been handed down.
Thompson was given a two-year sentence for assault with a deadly weapon, with an additional three years for bodily ham.
CN: Man gets into verbal altercation with cyclists, cuts in front of them and slams on brakes in front of them to "teach them a lesson", sentenced to 5years jail time.

Cyclists are supposed to follow regular traffic laws whilst on a cycle correct? Maintain a safe distance then?? Somebody had to pay I guess.

*droll* bodily ham */drool*

Seems to be a good sentence, hopefully others will realize trying to kill someone isn't a good response to an annoyance.

While I'm quick to jump on the, '****ing bicyclists!' train, I think this was a good measure. I think 5 years is a bit much but the guy does deserve some form of punishment.

Sure, but I think the driver pulled ahead and jumped the brakes very quickly, which just like if it had been done to a motorist, gives very little time for them to pull back to a safe following distance.

I dunno man, I don't think this is much different from intentionally ramming someone with your car(deadly weapon) and injuring them. I think 5 years is a bit shy of fair.

Seems fair.

No one would be worried if he'd been given this sentence for pounding someone with a sledgehammer. He hit them with something heavier.

I thought 5 years was a bit excessive, until I read this;

"Peterson went into the car's rear window and suffered broken teeth, cuts and had to have his nose reattached. "

Thompson was a former physician and cruising around in Brentwood, eh? Me thinks there will be a civil suit filed on this one...

Taken from the article above since you didn't bother to read it:
He exchanged words with two riders...before passing them and suddenly slamming on his brakes.

The former emergency room physician admitted on the scene that he slammed on the brakes in front of the cyclists on purpose in order to "teach them a lesson".

Judge sends message to aggressive drivers

I personally can't stand this attitude. The punishment shouldn't vary based on the judges desire to make an example out of somebody. X crime = X punishment every time.

This.

Someone should send all judges a message by firing this judge...

I only think he should be at fault, because he DID swerve around them, then slammed the brakes. If not for that fact, he should be not guilty.

Good riddance to the old ****.

His act was intentional and malicious. And it's not the first time he's tried this. He got a slap on the wrist a few years ago for running a couple of bicyclists off the road. I am sure there were other less serious incidents that went unreported.

I used the ride the trails that start a few blocks from where this happened. Could have been my nose that needed to be reattached.

**** him.

He should have sent them a message by saying that he saw a cat and stomped on his brakes and getting away with it.
