I'd like to know a little more about the brakes that Subaru put on my 07 STI. I've read the article about how to choose different brake pad materials, but I don't know what material Subaru put on my car at the factory. I haven't found talk about that yet here. What material are the Subaru stock pads, as discussed on the Essex article as linked to in this thread. All I ever hear about the STI is that it has "Brembo brakes", which I'm beginning to think may just refer to calipers, not pads, but I don't really know better.
Last week I was in for my regularly scheduled oil change and the dealer says I need new rotors and pads. I'm at 41K miles, and a relatively mild everyday driver, doesn't seem like I'd have worn things down to a complete brake job. I don't hear any terrible noises during braking, nor are there any brake warning lights yelling at me. But if they really do need replaced, I'm given a choice between two options, first is all Subaru original parts for about $1400, and the second is Hawk pads and whatever rotors for about $700. Are the Subaru parts worth about double the aftermarket kit? I don't know which Hawk pads exactly this refers to, only the brand name. I'd like to do an autocross here and there if I ever have time for it, but so far this car is a daily driver and little if anything else, so I don't need a super performance loud brake set, but if that's cheaper than a low-end but still expensive street pad from Subaru then why not. |

Could old FAQs (like this one) get revised?
I sincerely appreciate all the FAQs I find on this forum. I have a 2011 though and it's an STi. Some FAQs go back almost ten years! This makes me wonder what years and models of Subies they apply to...
Thanks for everything you have done and I hope I can lend some informative info from time to time. I just did a (racing), wheel-tire combo on my car and will post details soon. |

Just a random thing to add as I couldn't find it on a quick search and have since found out the info.
The bolt that holds the brake pad carrier(impreza) on to the hub assembly is a m12x1.25. I'll wager as these cars get older there will be a lot more of the "I snapped this bolt....HELP!" posts. This and it is usually cheaper to buy a loaded early wrx caliper w/bracket once you factor in the core, than it is just to buy the wrx pad carrier by itself, for those with an earlier impreza looking to upgrade to the early wrx brake setup. |

Quick question. I have an '00 RSTI. I just got a set of '04 STI Brembos along w/slotted '06 WRX rotors. I know the fronts will fit, w/no issues. But as far as the rear, will I only need the adapter brake shoes & rear conversion brackets? If so, will I also need rear '04 STI rotors or will my '06 WRX rotors be fine? Thanks!

Ok, how about this? In considering the Brembo upgrade I came across the Infiniti G37s sport calipers. They are MUCH less expensive and use a very similar 5x114.3 rotor to 05+ STi. Plus, they are DESIGNED for a 355mm oversize rotor, commonly referred to as a "big brake" kit rotor for STi. However, doing a little research, I realized that the pad size is almost exactly the same as the Brembos. Does that mean one could use the regular Brembo caliper with the larger front rotor? Does someone offer an adaptor to space the caliper up. Also, what would you do to the rear, preferably something that would work the rears a bit more, besides pad compound. Thanks, and sorry to revive old post!

For the rear: unless you can affect bias there is nothing to do but better pads. I am trying to find out if there is a simple bias control add-on. It is probably illegal for street-legal cars. See my following post. |

Bias control for GR's with ABS?
I am trying to determine if there is a simple "proportioning valve" add-on for front to rear brake bias control. It might require a valve for each rear brake line. Other proportioning orifices or controls might have to be modified or removed in conjunction with adding proportioning valves.
The other thing I don't understand is the effect of removing the ABS fuse and disabling it. One friend racer says he does it on his '09 STi. Could this affect braking bias? This is pretty good as far as specs go for the '08+ STi. Does anyone know of a schematic for the brake lines and ABS system as to what goes where? Has anyone done mods to the braking system for road racing? I'm trying to avoid stripping out all of the brake control system and starting over. |

When to upgrade brakes
I cant find any FAQ about when to upgrade breaks. My 09' WRX hatch is stock right now but next week I will be running Cobb stage 2 with a 3'' downpipe with a high flow cat. Also I will be installing the Eibach anti-roll kit. I am pretty sure I will not need to upgrade my brakes at this point but I plan increasing power in the future and want to know when to work upgraded breaks into my budget.
Please be as specific as you can with how "upgraded" breaks should be with certain levels of power gain. I know this subject has a lot to do preference and opinion but I guess you could say that my main concern is safety. Any knowledge or recommendations on this subject will be greatly appreciated! If this has already been discussed somewhere else please redirect me. Thanks. |

Most car brakes can be overwhelmed by a day at the track (HPDE event). So, if you just plan on having a zippy DD then you may not need to do a major brake upgrade... ever. If you drive in any kind of spirited manner and want to be safer, you should start with upgrading to good pads and better brake fluid, and do that now. |

Sorry, I am not an expert on GD's, but I can say that for GR's, changing out the rear calipers to something bigger/racier, is not necessary; the fronts, most definitely. I may be wrong, but I want to say there is an adapter available that allows you to put a late model (fixed), rear STI Brembo on your car. |

I think I found what you were looking for. It describes the differences in 02/03 brake pads:

Anyone know if Andros Spec J wheels will clear 04 Brembos
New WRX owner, new to NASIOC... I couldn't find this anywhere and as a new NASIOC member I can't start my own thread yet. Sorry if this isn't the best place to post this question.
Anyone know if Andros Spec J wheels will clear 04 Brembos on a bugeye? I can get a cheap set with good snows on them, but I would rather not drive all the way there just to pull a wheel, test fit them, and find that they don't clear. Thanks for any help you can give. |
