Default "Shouldn't the gas pedal be on the other side?"

This is what my wife's grandmother asks outloud to nobody in particular as she is looking at a new car with my father in law. Why is she looking at a new car? Well, it's because she ran a red light recently and totaled her car. We now think she might've gotten the gas and brake confused and floored it through the intersection.

The last time my wife and I rode in the car with her, we both thought we were going to die. She cut off several people, drove the wrong way through a parking lot, went out of turn at a 4-way stop - it was bad. If she gets another car, she's going to kill someone, or herself.

Questioning the location of the gas pedal should be definitive evidence that you should NOT be driving a damn car. But, she's still going to get a car and the state thinks she is capable of driving. Oh yeah, and grandma had a relative help her with the online driving test she was ordered to take. Good show!

Whatever she gets, make sure you give her one of those Darwin stickers for her trunk.

Well, if she gets in another accident, she'll probably end up killing somebody else and walk away without a scratch. Like how drunk drivers are always fine when they wreck. Old people drive monstrous 2-ton Buicks and don't have the reaction time to tense up like a non-ancient person.

I'd like to hear about Darwin's theory on survival of the Old and Decrepit.

Solution: buy her a car with a manual transmission.

There's validity here...

It's cruel, but she would have her cake.

She was a little miffed that the shifter was not on the column on whatever car she looked at. So a 6-speed dog box would suit her well I imagine.

We went through the same issue with my grandfather when he started 'slipping'. Even after a few fender-benders, it's very hard to tell an elderly person that they shouldn't be driving anymore. They don't like having that freedom taken away from them.

No worries. Odds are it'll be someone else's great-grandkids that she mows down, not her own.
