Your numbers don't match. So you put in 14.3 gal one time when the tank capacity is 14.5 gal? Assuming 14.5 gal is actually correct, you were within 6 miles of running out of gas?

He just wrote them in the wrong order.
2nd tank = 4 3rd tank = 3 4th tank = 2 |

Ok. Now it's "perfectly" matched. Got it.
4th tank = 28.6 MPG 417 miles 3rd tank = 28.7 MPG 411 miles 2nd tank = 29.4 MPG 374 miles 4 3/15/12 417.0 14.17 29.4 3.679 3 3/8/12 411.0 14.30 28.7 3.679 2 3/1/12 374.0 13.26 28.2 3.699 1 2/23/12 12.56 3.599 |

Sorry for the confusion - I did type 28.6 when it should have read 28.2...
Fuelly user name is bobz if you would like to see the data (http://www.fuelly.com/driver/bobz/impreza). This is a car my wife drives primarily and yes, I was concerned when she said she put in 14.3 & 14.17 gallons into a 14.5 gallon tank. She works night shift and didn't feel like stopping on her way home and pushed the limits to get fuel the next day instead... The dates of the fill is also shown. The order of tanks is correct. 1st fill is actually the second tank of gas the vehicle has had. Since I didn't put the first tank in, it doesn't consider that tank in the calculation. I tried to clarify based on the copy and paste and created confusion |

No problem. There's always Subaru Roadside Assistance. Also, I can see on Fuelly your car has the 5-sp MT.

lol - I actually needed the roadside assistance with my passat 1 time while in a rural area of Maryland. My gps brought me to a gas station that no longer existed (but a lovely new neighborhood being built) and I was unfamiliar with the area and needed diesel. I'd like to say there's no excuse for running out of fuel - even sometimes when diesel is harder to find - but not when I get 600+ miles to the tank. My diesel is "vented" so my 16 gallon tank can fit 18 or so gallons. The wife does tend to top off in hopes to extend the time between refills.

6th fill-up today, finally my first above 30mpg (30.1 ).
The vast majority of my driving (>85%) is rural (~35 mph), hilly, no traffic lights, and less than 10 miles. [So my driving's not representative of much of anything.] With that and winter, I've been getting in the 27 range. This tank had two highway runs, and it made a HUGE difference. filled up this morning, best tank so far at 30.2 actual mpg. Trip gauge read 32.7 - caveat being that on my last fill it wasn't a true complete fill (1st bar dropped off within 10 miles of fillup) so the 30.2 number is taking into account a missing gallon or so of gas. It'll even out anyway.
Drove about 60 miles since fill, average is 33.9. That included a 6.4 mile test loop that I've taken twice now. The last time I did it (tried to find my post about it but couldn't) the temp was in the 30s, but it was after I'd been driving and the engine was completely warm. The loop returned 38.x on the mpg readout. This morning the engine was cold, temp 70 degrees and the loop returned 34.8mpg. I'm at about 2600 miles now, and it is becoming pretty clear that a combination of cold and the pzev are a major detriment to mpg for this car. Bring on the warmer weather is all I can say to that! I also noted that after that loop and the 34.8mpg readout, 2 hours later I drove my same route that I normally do to work...and the mpg meter had ticked up to 36.2 by the time I passed work 13 miles later (on our way somewhere else). An even better number! This car really likes to sit between 60-65mph on the highway. I'll keep updating my fuelly (that site is great for tracking actual gas consumption/expense, started using it with our other car too), not sure how much longer I'll stick around to read these couple of threads though, nothing new seems to be coming up and I'm just damn well enjoying this car. |

Maybe the numbers are so good because the gov doesn't subsidize and require ethanol blends in their gasoline, hah. I hate ethanol!

It is pretty much mandated here in MN, there are several stations that are reported to have non-ethanol blends however they aren't marked - essentially don't have a choice in the matter up here - I would much prefer to run without it, as I wouldn't be surprised to find every percent of ethanol mixed costs me the same in real world mpg.

If ethanol were a good idea (or any government subsidy program at all for that matter) it wouldn't need a subsidy.
Maybe it would be fine when fossil gas runs out and we're all riding scooters... |

Question about MT highway mileage:
I know it's early, but has anyone done a pure freeway trip in a 5-speed model yet? I'm considering getting a base manual 5-door as a commuter car; my trip is 95% freeway and I can drive a steady 65-70. My wife's 2008 Impreza 2.5i Auto gets about 30 on the freeway - I'm hoping for quite a bit better out of the smaller engine and fifth gear |

Can't comment on the MT, but the CVT loves to be between 60-65mph, readout is routinely above 40mpg (instant readout) at that speed.

"Thank you for contacting Subaru Canada Inc. Here's some information about the different testing procedures between the United States and Canada: Natural Resources Canada (highway procedure) - 16km trip with average speed of 77km/h and a top speed of 97km/h. The test runs 13min and does not include any stops. All vehicles are tested in 2WD and adjusted later to account for AWD weight, rolling resistance, engine load etc. The entire procedure is outlined on page 5 and 6 of the 2011 Fuel Consumption Guide. EPA (http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/fe_test_schedules.shtml) - The EPA tests vehicles at about the same speed (48.3mph = 77.7km/h) but they have three additional tests which were added in 2008. These include an air conditioning test, a cold temperature test and a high speed test which includes higher top speed and more aggressive acceleration. The EPA also applies a 22% correction factor to highway fuel consumption while Canada only applies a 15% correction factor (http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/programs/env...faq-139.htm#a3). So it's apples to oranges comparing the two numbers. Hope this helps! The '12 Ouback I was driving had the cvt. I didnt like it, but it did pretty well with fuel economy. So well that it made me wonder why they didnt just put the 2.5 fb in the Impreza. I really dont think fuel economy would be too far behind the 2.0fb.

I have no idea how, but I got an average of 41.4 mpg this morning on my 75 mile commute, according to the computer readout. With 10% error (the max I've seen between reality and the readout), that's at least 37 ish. Not bad! My overall (not just highway, but my in town commute, which was terrible because I went through the car wash twice with the vehicle on and was stuck at a lot of lights) was ~36, so at least ~32 ish for 20 miles in town plus 75 miles highway.
Huge improvements since I bought the car in January. I am thrilled, to say the least! |
