Ways to stiffen up the steering??
I'm trying to think of different ways to stiffen up the steering. It's on of the things that I haven't liked since I got the car.
1. Pully's 2. Take out power steering. 3. ? 4. ?

What do you mean? Put some sticky tires on there. That will make it feel nice & tight! |

my suggestion, Parada Spec-2's that ought to do it. And in my case you combine that with torque steer and there ya go.

well, go drive some other 'fast' cars. i'd say the steering on the WRX is well above average. i still don't quite understand what you mean about "stiffening the steering" though.
do you want a faster/slower rate? |

Go drive a mini, and you'll see what good steering feels like. It is sharp, wheel stays on center easily because it's "stiff", not twitchy, but move it and you feel the good resistance and you turn fast. The WRX(and my RS) feels a bit sloppy in comparison. This is one thing I've heard over and over about subaru's(and I agree) is that steering should be better, I don't know why they haven't really fixed it.

Well, a faster rate would be nice also. What I mean is have more resistance when turning the wheel. |

I have no power steering and it is not fun! Parallel parking is quiet a workout.

when i said that they sucked, i meant that they have BAD grip. they are horrible tires BECAUSE of the grip and the lack of sidewall strength.
now if you want a nice looking tread design for your showcar that's a different story..... but ,for people that have had paradas and have put them to the performance test, they come up short. -ROBSTA |

I don't think that would give the steering more resistance and feel, tho it might take out some of the slop...

If you want a more weighted feel to the wheel when turning, the ALK helps. A new alignment with more positive castor should help too (the ALK adds 0.5 deg IIRC). I've got the comfort ALK and have been happy with the results.

power steering pulley should take care of that.
i think they make underdrive PS pulleys that have that kind of effect. i think therse also a way to change the power steering boost. i dunno, personally i love the way the steering feels...part of why i bought the car. |

What Lightbringer said.... or as with most things like this... do a quick search on Google on these terms,,, and you will learn more than we'd have time to write here.

BTW, more positive caster will make steering stiffer. If that is what you are looking for. Anti-lift kit or caster plates will give you more caster. But I believe you will encounter a lot more bump steer.

Yes. There would be more force trying to center the wheel making it require more force to turn the wheel into a corner. I presume it would have the opposite effect coming out of the corner i.e. less force is required to straighten the wheel after a corner.
Lightbringer Heh, I wonder what he really is looking for. |
