Question Seat Belts? do you use them?

Just noticed a reply on a thread urging people to use their seat belts.
I know when I lived in the US a lot of people didn't use them, and wondered if people had wised up since then. Personally I find it nearly impossible to drive without one as I feel very unsafe (a friends car 1961 Austin A40 doesn't have any)
So do you or don't you?

yeh, the air bags fitted to the cars in the USA are larger than here in the UK, to take account of the fact that driveing without wearing a seatbelt in the USA is very common.

You have gotta be pretty stupid to not wear a seatbelt when driving, takes about a second to fit and is proven to save lives.

Bit of a no-brainer to me.

Give me a five point harness over a silly explosive bag any day.

I never drive without a setbelt, even to move around the driveway, I feel naked.

Did you know... A five point harness is not an approved restraint device. Our country is retarded sometimes.

same, even when I'm just moving my car to another spot I put on my belt. My old car (Escort) had motorized seatbelts. I feel weird without them on.

It'a odd.

For some reason or another I didn't wear them when I had my last car.. if I remember correctly they used to rub like a bastard on my neck..

but ever since getting the RS I always wear them.. even bug my passengers to put them on...
the car brought about a change in me for some reason.

Please please please! Anyone that doesn't use them, please do! The work, they work, they work, they don't trap you inside in the event of an accident. They're not uncomfortable (well, except maybe for a nudist) or choking.

Been to many accidents. Every time I find a body on the roadway, or in a tree, ejected from the vehicle? No seatbelt. Always a closed casket funeral. Any questions?

For all of you who don't use your seat belt 100% of the time, in the front or back, I think Darwin would love to talk to you....

I never, ever drive w/o my seatbelt. I don't care how short the drive. First of all it's safer and second of all I want to set a good example for my kids. I would never consider driving them around if they were not in a car seat either. I cringe every time I see a little kid hopping around in a car or a baby in someones arms sitting in the front seat. Please don't get me started....

many states have made it law that the driver and front seat passanger wear their seatbelts. This still doesn't keep everyone from not wearing their belts, but at least the gov. is trying to make people safe

I always wear it and bug my passengers too. It's the law in NY but I still see a large number of people not wearing them.

I never ever drive without them. In 1993 I totalled my car. Believe me, I am glad I was wearing my belt. I kept wearing it for a few weeks after the accident in the shape of a blue/green/yellow bruise across my torso.
Any passenger who does not want to wear a belt in my car can get out and walk.
(A little trivia for you: In Germany the driver is responsible for all passengers in the car. If someone in the car does not wear a seatbelt, and that includes the rear seats, the driver gets a fine.)

I also feel naked w/o them. Got into the habit when I got my 240Z, for some reason they felt necessary in that car (even though I was young & immortal back then). Worn them ever since.

yeah i agree i can't drive across the parking lot w/o one .. also in ID it is a $50.00/per person ticket for driver and front passenger.. i have seen it where cops will pull people over ppl with white shirts because they can see that they are't wearing them while driving the other way.

I'm glad all of us are smart and use our belts! I too feel naked without one. There are too many people out there that don't wear them though... that's a shame.

There is no way I will ride in any vehicle unless I am wearing my seatbelt. Too many bad things could happen if I don't.

I don't even feel right being in a car without having my belt on. Even if its not moving. It just feel weird! Unless, of course, I am parked with my baby!

I've been in quite a few accidents, and have helped alot of people at acciodnt scenes, and i'd have to say that the seatbelt is key to not bieng injured in a accident...

just 2 weeks ago i witnessed a guy in a cadillac get ejected, finding his body was not a pleasant experience... no seat belt= free flight after impact.

Always wear my belts... why go through life making risks for myself...

if my passengers don't want to and refuse sometimes I tell them no belt no ride...
sometimes I just take a hard corner and watch them slide from right rear to left rear seat - usually they wise up pretty fast.

Pilot, i read a post a while back saying that a harness in a car w/o a roll cage is worse then a norm belt. the reason is because if the car were to roll the person strapped in the 5pt would not be able to lean over and avoid the roof. The person in the norm belt would be able to lean over and avoid the roof from crushing their spine.

I only use my harness for auto-x. and i don't think i'll be rolling my car in an auto-x any time soon

Matt, actually, at the last SCCA autox in Long Island, somebody rolled their Civic. The roof was caved in & the windows blew out, but luckily the guy was just fine.

Actually, the Subaru crew was in an adjacent parking lot running in a PCA autox, so none of us saw it happen. It was a late-80's Civic hatchback running slicks, and it was a really twisty track, so I assume that it was due to a high center of gravity, lots of traction, and tight turns. Not sure what kind of restraints he was running, I just saw the wrecked car from a distance.

Also heard a story from one of the PCA guys about how someone totaled a 911 turbo at their last autox, but that's another story.

Matt,

Ever see a racecar with a full rollcage roll over? The roof only gets to the cage and then it stops.

However there is NO WAY that a 5 pointbelt is WORSE than a 3 point belt.

If your car rolls over and you are wearing a 3 point you CAN NOT duck becuase the seatbelt will lock and you will not be able to move your body to duck. With a 5 point the only difference is your belt is already locked, and with a CamLock you can get the 5 point off easier than a 3 point. Also the more stationary you are the better a job the car can do of proetecting you.

Lastly give me a cage and a 5 point belt and take my damned airbag.
