Advice on next mod??? Help from Local Seattle WRX 2.0 owners!!
Yo Everyone,
It's been a couple years since I have killed time here but I recently got a job that has minimally 6 hours of downtime a day so I am back. I have a 02 WRX Wagon live in Renton commute I405 often (y'all might a have seen me around) and I have done - Cobb Stage 2 Access Port, Perrin Turbo Back, Short shifter, HR springs, Wheels, adj sway bar w/links, KN filter, removal of silencer, and my favorite a Porsche turbo emblem on the back. What are your recommendations for my next horsepower mod? I was thinking: 1. Front Mount Intercooler 2. Cold Air Induction?? 3. new CHEAP turbo?? or 4. turbo timer? Any advice?? Dave

Why would you put a Porsche turbo emblem on a Subaru?

2. CAI again is terrible for your car without a tune, and still not worth it with a tune. Not much point in spending 250 on a product then have to spend another 300 to tune for it. 3. There's your winner. If I was you I'd get JDM pink injectors, a used vf-34 turbo, and a walbro fp then just rune Cobb's OTS stage 2.5 map. It'll fit in well. Then get a front mount down the line, maybe some water injection and an intake and take it to PDX and get a protune. For the Cobb 2.5 map though you want stock IC and stock intake. 4. Pointless on our turbos, since they don't rely solely on oil. All those do is help your turbo to cool down properly. Also curious on the Porsche emblem, but to each his own. |

If I'm not mistaken, the Porsche Turbo emblem is just the word "TURBO" in large letters. |

I'd do an up-pipe, sti injectors, walbro fuelpump, and a vf35. If you can't find a 35, then I'd go with a vf34. Then get it tuned at PDX.

New uppipe.
Just as a heads up, I opted to go with an equal length header instead of a stage 4 on my 2.0, which I found to be a very happy medium between a big turbo upgrade and the stock turbo. Slightly more lag but increased midrange and topend. Not as much lag as a vf-34, but less midrange too. I liked it, plus if you become a topend power freak, you can do both. I mention this because I wasted money on an uppipe because the APS header I bought has one. |

I saw you on 405 on time a couple months back. I remember the emblem. Go with a turbo upgrade.

#3 is really your only option should you decide to stick with Cobb's off-the-shelf maps. Cyclops already made a good recommendation as far as turbo, pump and injectors. If you decide to go with a bigger turbo, you have a lot more options but you'll need a custom tune. Thankfully, you're in a bit of a hotbed when it comes to custom tuning...you can drive all the way down to Portland, or you can have Smart Service do Cobb tuning, or depending on how much you want to switch things up, World One can tune the UTEC and Hydra very well too.
One good thing to keep in mind is, have you ridden in or driven a WRX with a larger turbo than stock yet? If not, you might want to see if anyone locally will give you a ride since it'll help you gauge what kind of turbo you really want. Slapping on the biggest turbo you possibly can isn't for everyone...it all depends on your driving style and what you plan to do with your car. If your car never (or very rarely) sees the track, a high horsepower turbo isn't going to do you much good (simply because there won't be any public roads where you can use all that power legally). |

That being said I've heard spool in a well tuned vf-34 or 16g is really not bad. Whatever I'm rambling now, take Verdugo's advice and ride in one and see what you think. Reading someone say 3500 rpms to start spooling and actually feeling 3500 rpms to spool are very different things. You may think you don't mind it but you may regret it and by then you're in too deep. |

I'm basically right along side you with my mods.. The next mod I can think of before going bigger turbo would be pulley (10ish hp).. However, it's right at about this point where our cars are out of easy hp bolt-ons and require more mechanic skill for the installs. ::sigh:: maybe it's time for an STI

Bleh, the only difficult part of the install is the injectors. If you've got someone there that's done em before it's not that hard, just time consuming.

custom tune on the accessport is my pick. Maybe a new topmount, as well- get about 10 more HP, then tune it, get up to 30 more HP. Adds to reliability, driveability. nice to know your stuff runs cooler.
I think I see you on 405 sometimes. I drive home that way too. Its been a while since I've seen u tho. |

You can also get a few more ponies out of a new y-pipe.
