There's some additional power that could have been had with EL headers, but that's a great power band to redline. Especially for track duties. I wouldn't be disappointed.

maybe theres some further hope for my M7960.....
the day after my tune i found alot of vacuum leaks around the purge control valve/solenoid lines. some of the vacuum lines in that area were rock hard and came off their respective hose barbs with zero effort. the vac lines that came directly off the intake manifold didn't seem to be on there very tight. they were all replaced and either clamped or zip tied. seems to have gained some spool and midrange power. turbo kicks in just above 3.5k instead of 4k. going back to yimi this saturday for a street log. if its a minor change or needs no change at all thats cool, and if it actually has to go back on the dyno, at my expense of course, im fine with that. none of this is put on paul my tuner or yimi as i did all the installs myself. just want to make it the best it can be. |

paul data logged it and there wasn't any change, lol.
i feel better knowing its fine though. the power curve is so linear its deceiving. track days here i come! |

Well, I just tuned my 2011 STi with this TOMEI AMR8265 turbo. Stock TMIC, stock exhaust header/DP, 2.5" turbo back.
First of all, this one is fully plug-and-play on 2004-2007 STi. Not on 2008-2011 where the wastegate needs to be moved down left. Concerning performances : good at power output considering its small physical size, not too good at spool/lag. Power output can get somewhere close to 480 bhp (400 whp). Lag is important : you floor the throttle even at high rpm, and you patiently wait for the pressure to be built. This is very noticable when looking at its spool performances. On 4th gear, you floor the throttle at 2000rpm, it will deliver 1 bar at 3500 rpm with full boost at about 3700rpm. On the other side, this turbo isn't expensive, so it can be a good choice when price is of concern. For comparison, a bolt-on Lateral perf MD321T, good for 450bhp will flow 1 bar at 3000rpm, a bolt-on Lateral perf MD321V, good for 500bhp will flow 1 bar at 3200rpm and a bolt-on APS SR56, good for 530bhp will fow 1 bar at 3200 rpm. All of them have very little lag, with instantaneous response due to their ball-bearing design. but all these turbos cost more than 2500 USD ;-) |

I have my M8265 on break in right now. Can't wait to see what it does. I previously ran an original 7760 and made north of 360whp on 93 with simple bolt ons and a tomei elh.

Here is a plot for a 7960 on our 2011 STi, and a link to the full writeup along with parts list.

Same for me with the 8560. Just buy a Samco or Perrin bended hose it will fit.

I got one too!
Hi Everyone,
Here is a list of supporting mods to accommodate my Tomei Arms 7960 Turbo Tuner: Shawn Church / Church Automotive Testing I do not remember the exact temperature that day, but I do remember it was around 82-85 Deg.F Dyno: Dynapack 2000 + 4000 Engine Management: Open source PSI: 19 tapering down to 16.5 at redline Octane: 91 whp: 344.1 @ 6,500 rpm lbft: 343.8 @ 4,490 rpm Car: 2006 STi OBP EJ257 2.5l Engine: Built bottom end Blueprinted / Balanced -OEM Engine gasket kit -2011 STi Nitrided crank -Mahle forged pistons 99.5mm -Eagle H-beam rods -ACL Race main & rod bearings -08+ STi Oil pump & oil cooler -Gates Racing timing belt kit -ARP Head studs Heads: -resurfaced and cleaned (lightly polished) Bolt-ons: -NGK 1 step colder iridium spark plugs -Killer B oil pick-up -DW 850cc Injectors -Walbro 255lph fuel pump -Tomei Arms 7960 Turbo -Tomei EL header w/up-pipe (heat wrapped) -Grimmspeed 3-port boost solenoid -Processwest TMIC -Zero/sports SUS Intake and charge pipe (using stock turbo inlet) -No name Downpipe (catless) yes it works fine. I've had it on for 5 years with NO problems. -HKS Carbon-Ti -Exedy HD clutch Over all I LOVE THIS TURBO! I'm all about the canyons, so my main concern is spool/response. My future engine modifications will be: -Possible FMIC w/ flipped intake manifold (not sure as it will compromise response slightly) -DW1100cc injectors -Tomei Pon-Cams -TGV Deletes -custom up-pipe for rotated setup & Tial MV-R 44mm v-band external wastegate dump to atmosphere -E85 -Re tune by Shawn Church Last edited by Omni Touge GDB; 05-17-2013 at 07:07 PM. |

If this is with pump gaz, then power and torque are at the engine, not at the wheel ;-)

Shawn said he was not going to impress me with numbers, which I was happy about. You can't do much with 91 octane either..
Before the tune was done it was at 20psi and injector duty cycle was at 85%. At first, Shawn thought it was a stock motor because I didn't say anything about it having a built bottom end, only bolt-ons. So he went for another run and leaned it out a bit with 19psi with injectors at 80% got the same whp/lbft. (I think the 7960 is capped at 26psi with the internal wastegate) not sure. I'm hoping for 420+whp on a E85 tune @ 22-24psi with the future mods I listed. |

Please mate, be realistics. With 91 octane, a car with stock heads and 17 PSI of boost @ 6000 can make 350 bHP (300 wHP), not more, beleive me.
A good realistic proof coming from Tomei : engineering report : http://www.tomei-p.co.jp/news/Report-EJ25-V1.html Have a look at chapter 3 : Bolt-on turbo graph and photo. With 19PSI @ 6000 it can make 370bhp (315whp) Last edited by FRWRX; 05-18-2013 at 06:19 AM. |

Great link^^^^ thanks. I have been debating the M7960 but its so hard to get good concrete numbers. Def looking for quick spool up and lots of midrange power. I'm just not sure if this is the way I should go yet...:/

Why believe you when you're getting your information from Tomei's technical report that is about the M7760??? Maybe you should READ the chapter and notice it states nothing of a M7960! Also, that R&D data is from using a M7760 + ej20, NOT a M7960 + ej25. Please by all means call (Church Automotive testing) and ask for Shawn. Ask him if his dyno reads in whp or bhp. Post his response before you make a bigger fool of yourself. |

EL headers aren't going to sacrifice any reliability. And especially if you're going to be beating on it, at least have headers that will flow as much as the turbo can put out. Your logic makes zero sense.

First, do you know anything about turbos ? The fact that they are using a 7760 instead of a 7960 has no impact as at 17 PSI on the 2.5L engine, both are flowing quite efficiently (about 70%), so its quite equivalent. they could use a GT35R at the same 17 PSI, this wouldn't make that much difference (maybe 10 more bhp because the efficiency whould be 75% instead of 70%). Second, Tomei report does use an EJ25 for the test (the report talk of EJ20 heads on the head chapter, that's all). Third, does anyone can really be idiot enough to beleive that, simply by increasing boost pressure from 14.5 psi stock to 17 psi and having good fueling and timings tunings, will leads to 100+ more HP at the cranck over stock 300 bhp ?!! No. Believe me, 17 PSI @ 6000 rpm on 91 octane without headwork on TMIC will always lead to 340 to 360 hp at the cranck on our 2.5L engine. that's a common well known fact. I don't say Shawn did a bad or good job, he just done as good as any other good tuner. I just say that war between tuners (who is the best ?) lead to overestimated dynos. |

Frwrx, check out my thread on the 7760. It made more on 91 octane that you anticipated, even more so with a stock long block non-avcs 2.0L. Also, most people in the U.S. state power number at the wheels and not bhp after tune. Add 20-25% to whp to get your bhp #s.
