Default have a question about that stuff under the hood

Do I need it? I mean, I heard stories about the paint bubbling, but I dont see why, so many other cars DONT have it, and the paint is fine, and I am getting it repainted this summer anyhow with *good* paint. (he he) And while Im at it, I want to take out the scoop gaurd thingy. I figure, my civic had a turbo vent hood, and in the late winter, water would sit on the header itself, and melt off when it ran, and it didnt have any problems, and the engine can get even more water on it from under the car anyhow. So can I ditch that stuff and pop off the scoop thingy??

Im also a little worried about temps, and I think this may help just a bit. As well as a new thermostat, cap, and good fluid. whaddya think??

No problem to get rid of the vent covers, or whatever they are called. As for the "thingy" under your hood that has a few purposes.....sound deadening, if your engine catches fire that will melt and is supposed to "smother" the fire, and it also soak up heat that would other wise be transferred through the metal and into the paint where you may experience bubblage....which wouldn't surprise me because Subaru paint SUCKS balls.

ok, I think I will take it off. My car is getting repainted this summer anyhow, so if any paint problems arise, Ill put it back on before it gets painted. And I would think without it underhood temps would drop a little, because that thing seems to keep the hot in....

I never had one of those fiber things on my wagon, and never had any problems with my paint (at least from anything other than cats...... )

It came stock like this.

Yeah, I've got LOTS of paint problems. And none of them what-so-ever are heat related. My front right bumper met a guard rail once (very slow, 2 mph). 50k of driving in snow on roads that had gravel on them. Skiiing has screwed over the paint on the rear bumper.

A few chips on the hood have gone all the way to bare metal and it's starting to rust.

My car came stock without that fiber thing too. I think its just a safety thing. Doesnt really hurt anything, so might as well leave it. Wouldnt hurt to remove it though.

The main use for that thing is to keep engine bay warm during winter.. In summer it doesn't server any purpose what so ever... Beside engine bay never gets so hot that will buble the paint. After all engine is mounted lower than in non subaru cars..

well there... my 2 cents
