Help- EGT spikes up to 2200F?!
I just bought this Foz less than a week ago (found it here on NASIOC) and it runs great. The only thing that has me concerned is the EGT gauge keeps giving me outrageously high temp readings sometimes. It seems to be when i get in to a little boost and let off the throttle it will jump up to 2233F. (See video at -http://n0stalg1a13.tumblr.com/post/66319238856/egt-spikes-it-beeps-when-the-gauge-reads-around ---the lighting gets better towards the end of the video)
I'm not exactly sure where the EGT sensor is drilled in to because i haven't had a chance to get underneath the car and look at it. It was installed by the previous owner who claimed to have had a "former subaru mechanic" with him. Here are a list of mods. (From the Sale Posting) "MadDad Turbo boost + EGT + water temp gauge (dash mounted) + dash pod (3-in-1 gauge) [programmable for alerts and various other things] MadDad Oil temp gauge - pressure wire ran and ready, just need to install gauge in ashtray area MadDad Oil pressure gauge - temp wire ran and ready, just need to install gauge in ashtray area Engine: Kartboy shifter bushings STi transmission bushing Invidia Q300 Catback snorkus delete Royal purple diff and trans fluid New rear O2 sensor "XTI" Engine Upgrades: STI turbo (vf39) - rebuilt and factory fresh with warranty STI intercooler Helix 3" down pipe with high flo cat, heat-wrapped to keep hood temps down Walbro 255LPH high pressure fuel pump Cobb Accessport v2 tuned (Stage 3 VF39) - brand new & included with sale The "XTI" swap was completed about the 67K mark, so it's only been running at Stage 3 for about 6K miles. Everything that was done on the engine was done professionally and correctly. If any part, gasket, nut, or screw was questionable - it was replaced. It's been running mobile 1 synthetic exclusively since I got it."

The sensor should be located in the #4 runner of the header. It sounds like a bad sensor. I'm pretty sure if the exhaust really was getting that hot then you would have a whole mess of soft steel after the end of a spirited run.

That doesnt seem possible. Probably bad thermocouple or wiring.

That makes sense. I'm planning on putting headers and a new up pipe on the car before I have it professionally tuned pretty soon here. Those OTS maps just have me a little paranoid from what I've read here. Is there anything that I should be worried about in the mean time before I get that fixed? (Thanks for the help! I'm pretty new to all of this)

You're choice of oil is mobile1? Have you noticed any burning toward the end of your oil change intervals? I suggest moving up a weight ie 5w-40. Familiarize yourself with the oils our cars like, it'll save your motor one day.

Thanks for the heads up!!! I was putting 5w40 in my last wrx because that's what my tuner told me to put in it. I'll be sure to read up on what's best for my baby! -(I've done more reading here in the last week than I did my whole high school career due to said problem)- I don't want any mishaps down the road. |

Yeah, generally if you want something that works well, there are a few good concoctions on here, but personally I'd just grab Redline (I forget which one). Also, look at Redline 5w-40 or 0w-40. It has an amazing HTHS rating (better than Motul 300v), as well as one of the lowest NOACK volatility around. In my 2013 WRX, I actually don't have to add oil at all between fill ups (although you should always check frequently still)

Thanks for all the good info. I was putting redline in my wrx because of a similar suggestion from a friend so looks like I'm gunna switch it all out on the foz too!
