For me, it wouldn't matter if the car had a CVT or a traditional slushbox auto tranny (or even a DSG tranny).

No stick, no buy.

I would have liked leather and a sunroof too. But I only buy cars with manual trannies, so I stuck with the Sport Premium. I would have bought a Sport Limited if it could have been purchased with a stick.
Same here, so I'm slowly adding leather to the interior. I'm not sure what SOA's logic is, other than they really want to push the CVT.

It seems like a strange decision since in other markets leather and standard transmissions are available together.

No, I think Subaru's market research shows that as the car's purchase price increases, the percentage of buyers who want sticks decreases. I guess the more money people have to spend (especially when the car being purchased is not a sports car), the less willing they are to row their own gears.

Fine. Subaru doesn't want to build a bunch of Sport Limited cars with sticks and then have them sitting around un-bought. The problem is that they could have gotten more profit from the car I bought if there was such a thing as a Sport Limited with a stick.

Honda does the same thing. You can only get an Accord with a stick in the lower models. Once you ask for leather or a V6 engine, the stick goes away (except for the Coupe, which even Honda admits is sporting enough to justify a stick throughout the entire Coupe range).

But the decisions some companies make about this are very confusing. Take the Smart Car, which can't be purchased with a stick. Now there's a small car with what I hear is the worst auto tranny on the face of the planet. I'll bet a stick would make that car infinitely more pleasant to own.

I've heard that when Chevy starts selling the diesel Cruze later this year, it will only come with an auto tranny. That's stupid. Many people who want to buy diesels are driving enthusiasts, and would prefer a diesel Cruze with a stick.

Some Ferrari models can't be purchased with a stick. Huh? A thoroughbred sports car that can't be purchased with a stick? Really?

So for you, the leather was the main thing. For me, it was the stick and clutch.
it wasn't actually the main thing. in this particular case it was so the mrs. could drive the car. logistically it made more sense.

all this being said if I disliked the CVT more and liked the manual in this car more that could have swung me towards the manual. the "downgrade" to the CVT wasn't as big to me as it apparently seems to some of you guys.

I pre-ordered mine before any were in the states to test drive.

My wife has a CVT Nissan Rogue. I have nothing specifically against the CVT, but I much prefer to drive a stick, so that is what I ordered and am quite happy with it, even more with Amsoil in the differential and the Perrin short shift adapter installed.

Technically the Smart calls it a clutchless standard with an automatic mode. The automatic mode is programmed to shift like someone driving a standard for the first time so anyone with a brain drops it into the manual mode. Regardless don't buy a Smart! Especially if you live somewhere that gets winter, DON'T BUY A SMART! It was alright in the summer but still, don't buy a smart! The point I'm really trying to make is, DON'T BUY A SMART!!!

My wife can't drive a stick. Approximately 2x/year this creates a logistical problem that we need to work out. I'm willing to deal with that occasional inconvenience.

I'm sure she'd prefer it if I bought my cars configured so that she could drive them. But she knows that's not going to happen unless someone blows my left kneecap off.

I understand, I specifically told the dealer that if he tried to sell me anything but a 5sp I was walking out. I was also ordering the car

Luckily my wife drives a 5sp in her jetta. Only my Buick is an auto, and most likely our next new vehicle will be a manual as well since we both prefer them

your dealer should have offered to put leather on the car, either when it arrives at the dealership aka katzkin which is about 900 or see if subaru would add leather at the factory.

Subaru won't budge on these things much. I really wanted my Premium 5mt in white, but they woukdnt let me have black interior unless I spent thousands more. So silver it was!

My wife drives manual and we both prefer cloth, win-win!

Not that it matters anyway, she has driven my car once, just to try it out, and that's probably the last time she'll drive it. She has her own car.

I'm with the others in here, manual, or no sale.

I had a Lexus ES350 for a while, the only automatic I've ever had, nice car, but soooo boring. I thought I was ready for a lazy, comfortable, automatic vehicle, don't know what I was thinking. Had a kid on the way, the Lexus rear seat didn't fold down, so I traded it for the Impreza and put a bunch of cash in the bank for a rainy day. The Lexus had almost double the horsepower of the Impreza, yet the Impreza is 100 times more fun to drive IMO.

Finally found another to test drive. This second test drive went much better. Didn't have the blower on full blast so I could hear the engine, and I knew I had to wind it out a little more. The Tacoma has me in a habit of shifting a lot sooner in most cases.

I'm heavily leaning toward the MT now. Still not 100% sure, but I'm just about there.

do it! the mpg difference is nearly negligible and it is much more fun to drive. if you think about it, even if the CVT got 10% better mpg (it does get better, 10%, not sure) it has the 1000.00 price premium and that still buys a decent amount of gas and at 15,000 miles/year, it takes 7 years to recoup the 1000 premium

I must have used a different gas price average, because I ran the numbers some time ago and figured it would take 5 years to make up for the cost of the CVT in fuel savings.

But yeah, I'm not really factoring in MPGs at all at this point. It really comes down to what I want to drive. I thought maybe I was ready to finally buy my first auto, but I think I'm probably going to put that off to another day. Plus I plan to have this car for a long time if I don't have problems with it, and my gut feeling is that the MT will be more problem-free in the long run.

I just figured 28 combined vs 30 combined at 4.00/gallon. It is only 35 gallons/year difference.

I drive 20-25k/yr so it would be a lot less time, but I hated the cvt, and cvt maintenance is much more expensive

Wow.... 6 out of 7 posts. Is that ADHD or what?

If you are thinking of eventually saving money with the CVT, don't. It's looking more and more like the 5MT actually gets better mpg.

If somebody doesn't believe that and has a 5mt, talk to me about a swap...
