Default Formula 1 2013 - Round 8: The Santander British Grand Prix at Silverstone Circuit

Last year's thread (with pics!): http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2372379

Situated in the farmland of Northamptonshire, England, just went of the M1, Silverstone is now in its 64th year and remains the spiritual home to Formula One, as well as the home track for most of the teams on the grid.

Last year, the teams battled not only each other, but the torrential rain that fell all day on Friday and again Saturday afternoon. Sunday's skies remained cloudy, but the sun warmed the dry track and the 125,000 spectators that came to see Fernando Alonso lead away from pole on his hard tires, followed closely by Mark Webber and Michael Schumacher on the option soft tires. The latter's grip faded quickly and he was soon supplanted by Felipe Massa and a hard-charging Sebastian Vettel. Toward the end Alonso opted to take the soft tires on his final stint (going H-H-S) and his pace faded a few laps from the end, allowing Webber (on hards) to sneak past under DRS for the win. Drivers going S-H-H fared better during the race. Standings at the end:

1. WEB
2. ALO
3. VET
4. MAS
5. RAI
6. GRO
7. MSC
8. HAM

This year, Sebastian Vettel arrives in the UK fresh off of his third win of the season, and his first at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Pirelli have opted for the hard and medium tires, going one step harder in the range for the options. Current standings:

1. VET (132)
2. ALO (96)
3. RAI (88)
4. HAM (77)
5. WEB (69)
6. ROS (57)
7. MAS (49)
8. DIR (34)

Contrary to Canada, this circuit features numerous high-speed corners and demands a high downforce configuration and rewards those cars with minimal drag. There will be two DRS zones this year to aid overtaking, one on the Wellington straight (as it was last year) and a second sector on the Hangar straight. Because of the need for high downforce, though, teams sacrifice top speed for grip in the corners and the speeds traps are approximately 13 kph slower than in Canada.

So who's it going to be on the top step this year? Mclaren are struggling massively, Lotus have had two poor races in a row, and Vettel appears to be hitting his stride. Can Alonso go one better than last year's result and close the ever-expanding gap to Vettel? Find out starting on June 28th!

This will be the third race of the year that I'll be bringing you as much high-resolution photography as you can stand. This is one of the best circuits for photography as Friday and Saturday allow roving grandstand access. I plan on bringing you looks from each part of the circuit (weather permitting).

I have massive issues with backmarkers such as those. 5 place grid penalties are bollocks for such backmarker teams and I would prefer the penalty to be along the lines of a drive through penalty instead partway through the race. The timing of this will be determined by when they are being lapped by the leaders.

Looks like it will be dry all three days at Silverstone, with temps in the high 60s to low 70s. There will be mud, but hopefully no puddles.

I'm at the FOTA forum! Sam Michael, Claire Williams, and Graeme Lowdon. Martin Brundle is here as well. Drivers will be on later.

I snapped a bunch of pics and will post them later. I got Sam Michael's autograph on my Mclaren shirt, too.

Interesting phrasing from Claire Williams regarding in-season testing, "We'd love to get our car out on the track and find out what's wrong with it. "

Ross Brawn said this before their Barcelona tests. Now he knows...

Martin Brundle and Daniel Ricciardo would race NASCAR if they could choose one series to race in while retaining their F1 connections.

Kinda surprised me.

I wonder what the appeal is. I'm not saying there isn't any appeal. I'm wondering what specific reasons they're choosing. Maybe the like being able to actually touch the other vehicle and be aggressive in that nature. Or, maybe the money is better.

Just wondering out loud, that's all.

people just race and get on with their life in NASCAR? or maybe that there is a ton of racing over the course of a weekend. Fri, Sat and Sunday and all associated practices and qualifiers?

Graeme Lowdon

Martin Brundle

Valtteri Bottas, Daniel Ricciardo, Max Chilton, Martin Brundle.

Lots of unused passes.... The crowd filled about 3/4 of the available seating.

The static 2011 Mclaren.

Guess who just scored access to the circuit tomorrow!

I don't know how I'm going to top this day. I had VIP access.

I had a Red Bull in the Red Bull hospitality centre, snapped candid photos of Charles Pic, Nico Hulkenberg, and a ton of Lewis Hamilton being interviewed for Al Jazeera TV, as well as my usual car and development part shots.

I also saw the back of a Sauber engine before the gearbox went on. So amazing.

I met the guy who publishes the official F1 book for the FIA while shooting in the Monaco pit lane and he emailed me last night and said he had a way for me to get into the circuit today. It was a spare VIP pass for someone else, but as long as you don't look too closely, nobody notices.

I'm back home now, and because I'm shooting for a publisher now, I can't post anything I'd consider book-worthy, and I'll need to step up the watermark action on those I do post. But don't worry, still plenty of eye candy coming.

Let me just say how awesome it is to be doing this on my home PC and not my old laptop....

Caterham front wings

Ferrari gearbox

Ferrari front brakes. Their cooling must be exceptionally efficient because the ducts are nearly flush with the tire sidewall.

RBR rear hub and brakes. I believe the flap at the bottom is a development new for this race.

RBR gearbox The under-skin flow modifiers (silver) are just to the left of the gold heat shield. There's a big chunk of ballast at the bottom as well.

Mclaren rear hub.
