Too late. But thanks for thinking about it. This whole Mobil 1 debate is even more BS. I did use EP 5w30 for 145,000 in my 07 WRX never used any oil. Changed it every 5-8,00 miles. No problems with the turbo or anything. I was told by EVERYONE Mobil 1 was liquid **** , no matter what blend. So I don't always listen to popular opinion.

I just dont understand why people are so adamant to reinvent the wheel here. X, Y, and Z oils are proven to work well and provide lasting protection in these cars, but so many people want to use Q, R, and S because....? I cant find any sort of logic to knowingly use a product that could significantly increase the chances of damaging an ENTIRE engine. Not just pistons/shortblock but turbo and heads...
Okay, you nailed one thing very well in my opinion. " Energy conserving " oil ... my first WRX was a 04. Like a big douche I searched high and low for the best oil. I even had a local parts store get me cases of Amsoil and even their filters. After 80-90,00 miles. Piston slap on start up. After a increase in oil consumption, which seemed to start the minute I started in with that oil. I wouldn't put that crap in my lawn mower.

Okay, One thing for sure so far. My gas mileage is not as good as it was before. I think the cigarette smoking man has stock in Mobil Exxon. I lost a easy 3 MPG.....

Get a new engine in it and sell it if you can. I know you'd be taking a hit on depreciation, but it sounds like you got more of a lemon than a normal Subaru. Get rid of it before the **** gets any thicker.

Come on guys, lets be serious here. Good oil and regular changes are very important but it wouldn't have prevented the OP's issue. I dont care if you're running $1 per quart oil or $1000 per quart oil, its not going to prevent knock induced engine damage.

Its very unfortunate that Subaru cant produce a car that's tuned well enough to run without blowing up but no amount of oil is going to prevent that.

The tune doesn't seem to be the problem with my engine failure. Go back a few pages and look at the pics. However now my car is sucking gas... so I agree. Subaru should be doing better than this. But its obvious they don't care what STI owners think. Just look at the results. Blown motors all over the place, and bs cel codes for everyone. Model year after model year. At least we all have sweet hood scoops.

give it a chance to break in, I wouldn't think to get any legitimate fuel economy results until after you put several thousand miles on it.

1200 miles so far... no change. But your right. It took several thousand miles on the last engine before I had decent MPG. But it was NEVER this low. As long as it doesn't blow up. F it.

Now I see what was wrong in the cylinder pictures. They were heavily glazed. Some have clamed over the years that too soft a break in can cause that, and it used to be recommended that brake in be done on dino oil before switching to the slippery synthetic. The claim was that the rings had to seat with the cylinders, and that required some friction.

Just some old school thoughts.

If you are really paranoid about your break in, you could get the engine bore scoped.

So as you pointed out, I broke it in soft the first time. 2nd time around conventional oil for the first 1000 miles. And beat it like it owed me money. Slow gradual high revs. In every gear. Shifting at 6k in as often as i could.

I saw that you used what was the conventional wisdom in an earlier post. Just wanted to confirm that old school isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Good luck.

P.S. I probably seated my rings the first week I had the car. Two day auto-x, and it doesn't burn a drop of 5w-30 dino Penzoil...

Update ... no matter how hard or easy I drive this car = 20 MPG ? And another BS thing. Shift alarm doesn't work in 3rd gear. Just the light flashes. I have officially run out of patience. The car does drive wonderful though. More power than before. Is this normal mileage ? I would get anywhere from 23- 30 MPG before. If I pound the daylights out of this thing 19.5 MPG... and if I drive like grandma 20.5 MPG. Very stupid. The only thing I have changed is I changed the diff fluid to synthetic. In my last 2 WRX's this actually improved my mileage by nearly 2 MPG. My head is going to explode. I just don't understand this.

From what I've read, about 20 mpg is normal for an STI.

I'm beginning to think if you were getting anywhere near 30 mpg in an STI, you were running too lean.

Helix is actually designed and intended to be used in high performance gas engines. Not to say T6 is bad. But there is other choices. I totally understand this is what I've bin saying and sure the results come back good. But on the other hand what is going to be the long term effect of using t6. Like u said if u pop a motor using I'll that is designed for diesel engines who knows if SOA will honor a warranty claim

I think on the highway when i first got mine, and this was 60 miles each way to work, on 93, i only got 22-25 mpg. at BEST and probably 21 or 20.8 average.

stock everything, 22'ish hwy., ots stage 2, 22'ish, ots economy map, 22'ish, protune 23 plus a butt load of useable power under the curve. Ontrack under heavy boost, <6 mpgs. 30 mpg's, even on the hwy, seems too high.

Just like any other performance vehicle, you do not buy an sti for fuel economy. You may be better off selling the sti and getting something else.

He's not complaining about his fuel economy it seems. He's complaining the before and after. My guess is he's worried about the quality of the motor rebuild and why his mpg is crappy compared to before.

I could get the MPG meter to float around 32-35 MPG. In disbelief I actually checked the mileage the conventional way. And it was actually around 30.5 MPG. So maybe I should just be quiet , but come on what a huge difference.

How did you manage 30 mpg? I have a my12 STI hatch and on the highway I get 25 if I put it in I mode and nurse the pedal.

I even took a picture of the MPG meter because no one believed me. 35.3 the actual average was just over 30.5 sometimes 31. It wasn't easy or fun but a great way to sip fuel on the commute to work secondary roads average speed 40 MPH 6th gear I mode Auto - diff. That mileage is definitely never happening again with this reflash.

My wingless/scoopless-rs hood/catless dp/fmic 05 sti with 70k miles averaged 26.9 mpg on my last tank of 93, with fresh oil in the pan.

Was getting right around 25mph just before with about 3,000 miles on the oil in the pan.

These are all highway miles and with a passenger. Carpool ftw.

That' definitely not good for the car, I have a 5spd and my final gear ratio is close to your 6th and there's no way the engine is happy at 40 mph in top gear.
Probably prone to knock/misfire if you put some load on it with the RPM barely above idle and heavy load on the engine.

I wonder if the trip computer learns driving habits to make it's calculations. During break in you were driving relatively hard, and before you were babying the car.

Removing the batt ground for a bit and loosing all the aggressive learning, and radio settings, may restore the high mpg readings, or just time will do the deed.

It's weird that you shift buzzer doesn't work in ONE gear. Maybe the new cars are different, but mine can't tell what gear it is in.

Personally, I don't like the buzzer as there are corners at the track/hillclimb/auto-x that I like to hold the gear longer and not shift up at the entry. My shift light is set 800 rpm before the rev limiter. First also gets held to red line. It's an area under the curve thing.

On the street I don't like going below 45mph in 6th. Your dual AVCS engine has a different power curve though.
