Hi from newbie Mooseman
Alright guys, I've recently moved from London, England to Vancouver, and having been carless for about 4 months now, I am seriously considering a WRX Sti as my next motor. I have some issues to sort out, mainly insurance and also leasing costs - can anyone suggest a reputable and cheap insurance broker?
Back home this car would cost around $10k to insure, so completely out of my price range, but here in Canada insurance works differently, so I am hoping that I can afford it!! I have researched the WRX Sti now and although I have not driven one yet, I know it would put a smile on my face. I hope to let you all know the good news soon, but is anyone has any obvious pointers please let me know! Cheers, Mooseman

Hi & Welcome to NASIOC.
Regarding your insurance and leasing costs it might be better asking the guys & gals in the Vancouver forum. Link: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=30 |

Welcome to Vancouver!
With public insurance, it should be way cheaper to insure than $10,000 , but I don't know how ICBC handles driving experience from other countries. I wonder how much of a safe drivers discount they'll give you. If they don't give you much, it may take a few years before you can earn the max discount. Once you do establish a safe driving record here, you can go with a private insurer (CDI) for the optional coverage and save an extra few hundred dollars. |

Welcome to Vancouver!
We have a newbie in our branch office and he too just moved from England.. one day when another dude was saying how great his big-displacement Mustang is, while the newbie says the 4-door sports saloon like the EVO is where its at. Interesting how different the thinking is from across the pond. |

^I'm sure we can all agree that in the end, you want light weight and high power
welcome to the forum, insurance is probably more then half of that for an STi with no discount (you get 5% off every year you're licensed here for a max of 40%)... But yeah, they're fun cars for sure. Last edited by GlobalWaste; 09-25-2006 at 06:59 PM. |

hello and welcome!
just wanted to add my 2 cents re: insurance cost and discounts. try to acquire a letter from your insurance company back in GB that states that you are a safe driver w/out any accident records, and have been driving for such and such period of time. submit that to icbc and they'll give you a discount based on your record and years of driving. a good clean record with 5 - 10 years of driving experience means you might be eligible for a 40% - 42% discount. good luck! are there moose in england or do you like eating moose? LOL!!! |

Cheers for the replies fellas, I appreciate the welcome. I have actually spoken to an insurance broker today, and the news is not bad - my previous insurance does count, although I need written confirmation which I have for the past 3 years, but could prove to be a bugger for the remaining 7 years I have
The guy said budget $2400, which is a little more than I was hoping, but better than $10k Yeah I would prefer an Evo if I had the choice, but they are not allowed here for 16 years after they leave the factory, similar to skylines and other imports. I'm relishing the day of driving a new type of vehicle, especially a 300bhp 4wd beast ... my old car was an RX7 FD so pretty different. So I'll see how the lease negotiations go and also finalising the insurance. Bring it on! |

$2400 is quite cheap for an STi.. i thought they are more around 4000 with no discount.. are you going through ICBC? good luck on your purchase! |

Can't do the bbq i'm afraid - have footy on saturdays! Hope it goes well! The $2400 is with 8/9 years worth of discount - likely it will be more expensive Waiting for an email back from the dealership - surprised they have not jumped out of the computer and taken my arm off, but maybe the guy was away from work yesterday ... |

IIRC, evo's aren't legal in canada because of the front bumper, and i have heard rumours that is the reason mitsubishi isn't selling them right now. also, welcome, and Have with your STi |

It's not so much the FMIC as much as it is the reinforcement bar on the front. Some of the Japanese cars out there have broom handles for re bars.

I've heard from many different sources that the reason some of the higher spec cars from Japan fail crash test standards, so pretty much the nose being made out of balsa wood (avec broom handle), which is ironic, cos the new vette IS made from part balsa wood
shame really, but an sti will do the trick yeah I guess I could have a banana whilst driving ... seems strange though for something to do after just getting a new car yeah and footy is "soccer" ... I get enough grief from my family for calling it football and not soccer! haha |
