Question We might be moving to Germany: (1) anyone lived there?

Like the title says, we might be moving to Germany in a few years and be there at least a few years. Specifically Munich area. Anyone lived there? Things you really liked? Really hated?

Really Liked: Everything
Disliked: After a year or so you start missing the states. Small stuff.

I lived in Kaiserslautern area for 3 years and loved every minute of it. The way people know how to drive, the winefests, the small town atmospheres, the food, I could go on and on...you are a lucky man.

I'd live there just for the pretzles and schnitzle. Germany also had shockingly good croissants if I remember correctly.

Do it for your children. I travelled a lot growing up and it's what I am most thankful for. I learned more from seeing the world than I ever did from school. I think living in a foreign country would be an excellent life experiance, and they would learn a lot.

Things I liked while living in Berlin:
-walking down the street with an open beer and NOT being arrested/fined
-beer comes in .5L, standard
-excellent beer
-excellent country-to-country transportation with cheap flights and rail options
-Oktoberfest
-beer
-good tasting food
-fewer worries about political correctness
-general open nature about everything
-awesome public transportation inside cities
-tons of history
-gratuitous nudity on TV

Things I didn't like:
-older Germans' unwillingness to help me even after I butchered their language in attempts to get information on things
-lack of customer service
-expect meals at restaurants to take twice as long (tastes 10x better than in USA, but service is slow)
-getting paid in USD and having to convert it to the much stronger Euro. Pulling 100 Euro out for food/drink and seeing my bank account hit with $150.

Overall, living in Germany was fun. There are plenty of threads in OT about Germans and their ability/lack there of to accept new things and/or help foreigners in their country. Opinion goes both ways. I had great luck with some individuals and others picked and chose when they wanted to be helpful. Overall, I'd do it again if given the opportunity.

Man I'd kill to have the opportunity to go to Germany for a while for work. Kill. You're going to love it. I have a friend with family in Germany, and he flies back every year to visit them. He has never mentioned a single negative about the trip, although I'm not sure the town where his parents live.

What did people like about the food? I like a sausage and beer as much as the next guy, but not every day. From what I have been reading, 90% of the meat in groceries is pork! We spent 2 weeks in the German-speaking part of Switzerland and I didn't really like the typical food all that much: too heavy and fatty. The selection in grocery stores also seemed very limited by US standards.

Yeah, overall I think it will be good for them but I am concerned about the initial shock. Even if we put them into private schools it will still be rough on them.

My parents moved me to Norway when I was in high school. I went to an english speaking international school that was K-12. I can't think of a single incident where I saw a kid NOT adjusting. If you adjust your kids take note and follow suit. They're resilient.

Only as far as meats go, and I doubt even that's still the same as when I was a kid. Pork is (was?) simply more popular than beef (and definitely chicken).

Grocery stores are nothing compared to US standards. The local Ulrich that I shopped at could easily fit in the produce section of my local Giant. Do not expect to have tons of choices on things.

And zee Germans love to have full food. And while they like their pork products, I could pick up packages of ground beef, chicken, turkey and other meats. Again, the local grocery store had a decent meat counter, the fun came in attempting to order what I wanted.

While I found the selection limited, the ones I ended up going with were great. Lunch meats were good, cereal was just like the US, milk is milk, personal care products are almost similar with many brand names available, bread is bread and frozen pizza is frozen pizza. They have some interesting flavors of chips as well. However, half the fun was picking something up and trying it out. If I didn't like it, I walked back over to the market and picked something else up. Granted, I lived in the center of Berlin, so there were plenty of close options for grocery stores to walk to.

The music is terrible. When I was in Belgium there were a lot of Germans there, they would play music all the time, it was ridiculously bad. The beer they brought was good. I'm not sure if its the same there as in the UK, but shopping during the week is almost impossible. I would get home from work at 7 (hour and a half train ride) and everything would have been closed for an hour and a half.

Oh yeah, almost everything is closed on Sundays. Grocery stores, some department stores, small shopes and a few others.

Yeah, I've heard about this. Anyone who works regular hours ends up trying to do all their shopping on Saturday. I will be working freelance at home though (I hope) so I will have flexibility to shop during the day during the week

Hopefully grocery stores are opened during extended hours. Those were open till 11 on weekdays, but everything else was closed. It made Saturdays in Staines ridiculous, luckily London was a little more calm.
