I finished the roof vent today. I ran into a bit of an issue though. It appears that for the 06-07 wagons, they moved the map lights forward about 1/2" as compared to the sedans and the previous generation wagons. There is even a small shiney bracket that bolts to the roof and extends out toward the front of the car about 1/2" to relocate the holes for the map light.

What this means is that the hole for the map light no longer falls inside the hole for the roof vent trim. It sticks out by about 1/4" to 3/8". I was unaware of this, but after some research, I found two or three other people with this issue. Oh well. I filled the hole with some spare headliner material and it looks OK, but not great. It's much more noticeable in the pictures for two reasons: 1) The filler piece is wet because I was washing the tracing line off of it so it looks darker and 2) it's not quite flush with the surrounding headliner so the camera catches the shadow. Either way, in the daylight it doesn't look bad at all. I will be working on a better solution in the future that might incorporate new map lights. Perhaps if I cover my headliner, I can hide it better. It also doesn't look totally straight, but that's again, funny business from the camera.

Jay was cool enough to hook me up with a headliner template from an actual Spec-C that had the vent installed from the factory. When I put this over my headliner, the extended map light hole became clear.

In this picture, you can see that little silver bracket that extends the map light mounting location out toward the windshield. On previous years, the lights mount on the frame (blue part behind the bracket).

Here is the interior installed. That insert is much more symmetric than it appears in the pictures. If you look close, you can see where the map lights used to sit on the headliner.

And now views from the outside:

I'm so excited to finally have my vent installed!

I also have pretty much finished up refinishing the hubs and rear diff and all. I just need to start assembling everything. Which should go pretty quickly.

Here are the rear hubs and R180 with all the rust removed and some paint applied. The R180 and the hubs were done in black and then cleared with a chip/chemical/UV resistant enamel. In retrospect, semi-gloss would have looked better. Oh well.

These are the front hubs and knuckles. The knuckles were brand new so they just needed clear coat. The hubs were used and rusty as heck, but they cleaned up nice.

And for no other reason other than the fact that I was bored, I painted the tie-rod ends from the roll center kit. The kit was used and the ends were a bit corroded and rough. Probably a waste of time, but it was raining and there wasn't much else to do.

I know, I know. I really ought to knuckle down and get some stuff done on that front. I just hate getting infront of the computer after I spend 10-12 hours a day in front of one. Things should be settling down more for me in January though. Work is settling down (I hope) and the wagon will be getting done... ish.

I wanted to do the c spec roof vent. But I am worried that it will work with the seibon carbon roof. :-(

Honestly, I think it would work fine. It has its own frame so its not like its putting a ton of stress on the actual roof shell. A bit, but its not too bad. I'd probably give it a try.

Carbon could be a pain to cut through though. If you heat it up too much the resin will just melt rather than cleanly cut. If you were going to install it I would take the roof to a professional to have it cut.

Perhaps. But I bet you could cut it while dripping water and you'd be fine. A little water or compressed air goes a long way toward cooling.

Water is basically a necessity with cutting carbon fiber. It is also a very very very good idea to wear a mask or respirator. Carbon fiber dust is very damaging to the lungs as it lacerates the alveoli and can cause serious lung conditions. I used to know a guy who had some very serious issues with carbon dust inhalation. He used to cut custom chassis for radio controlled dragsters with no mask or respirator on. Took him about 6 months before he had to see a doctor when he started to cough up blood.

Why wouldn't it work?? the seibon roof is just a overlay on the stock metal and isn't thick enough to mess up the mounting of the roof vent,

Ah... I think the one I got is the replacement. Not the overlay.

Seibon only makes a cover. If you have the AMS one, that would be a real replacement.

just read up that it is an overlay.. Have to bring this up tomorrow when I pick up the car. I also see no reason now why it wouldnt work. Minus the blue vent in carbon ....lol

CF would be best cut with a diamond coated disc, but that won't be good on the steel, so stick to a fine-grit wheel for metal, and flowing water. Respirator, goggles, gloves, and outdoor cutting highly recommended. Change and wash clothes ASAP. Also, you don't want any dust to settle on the interior of the car where it can get higher aerated, so draping and tapping plastic from the roof above the front seats to the leading edge of the dash is recommended, as is covering the insides of the front doors.

Oh... and congratulations for adding weight to the highest point of the car.

You know what I'm talking about with CF. Some people treat it like it isn't a big deal.

I agree. Fibers in the lungs is not a good thing, not just carbon fiber, but a host of other things like fiber glass, etc. That's a quick way to ensure you get a lifelong injury that will shorten your lifespan considerably.

Carbon fiber is far more dangerous than fiberglass. One good respiratory exposure to carbon fiber can reduce lung function permanently.

I'm not arguing that it's dangerous, but I'm not sure if its far more dangerous. At least not in the eyes of the US Department of Transportation. In their analysis, they found that all type of fiber re-enforced composites can be can be extremely toxic/carcinogenic, but in most cases, its the physical geometry of the fiber with poses a threat, rather than it's chemical composition. (Though they note that there are some varieties of carbon fiber which did show a basis for being more toxic due to the chemicals uses in bonding of the fibers.)

Quote:
Fiber dimensions and deposition in the deep lung determine the toxicity of inhaled fibers. Animal studies have indicated that long, durable fibers that reach the alveoli cause greater pathologic effects than the shorter fibers which are cleared by the alveolar defense mechanism. Evidence of these effects has come from studies on toxicity of silica and asbestos.
Quote:
Studies on exposure to respirable fractions of raw PAN- and pitch-based carbon fibers do not indicate significant adverse health effects such as pulmonary fibrosis. Other studies involving occupational exposure to carbon fibers and dusts generated during manufacturing of composites do not provide adequate evidence of fibrosis or carcinogenic effects. To date, epidemiological studies have not been conducted to assess human exposure to carbon fibers released from burning composites nor have animal studies been published on the role of such fibers in pulmonary toxicity.
Much of the information on fiber toxicity comes from the study of asbestos, a major issue in the last 3 decades. This table hints at the relationship between fiber sizes in general and the effects in the body. Bad news.

Either way, don't mess around with these things without proper precautions.
