The whine has been there since day one and for me is only noticeable during hard acceleration. It was really noticeable during AutoX due to never getting past 2nd gear. It is normal.
as someone explained earlier they beefed up 1st and 2nd gear and gave them a straighter cut which in turn causes the noise.
Lets hope this dealer is not trying to pull one over on you.

The way I see it, I get a free rental car and I'm not putting miles on my car. It's all covered under warranty.

Seems like normal gear mesh noise to me. Every Jeep transfer case I've heard in 4 Lo has a whine to it as well, and that's chain driven. A gear driven transfer case is going to make some noise, especially at high rpm's.

You've heard the OP's transmission then I assume? If not I don't see how it seems normal if you can't hear it. So many people are convinced it is the normal whine without ever hearing the possible noise in the first place.

Went in today and took a pic of the gears. To me it looks like all the gears are helical cut. Except reverse of course. What do you all think?

Those look better than mine did. Don't see any difference between those and mine with the way they are made. I don't notice any wine in my car though.

Right, but my car wines from 1-2 and even before I did the shifter bushings.

That's good for you. I plan on going stage 2 soon also. But like I stated above, the car is already in the shop with the transmission torn apart at the moment.

Helical gears are definitely quieter than straight cut gears, but still make noise. Check out a car with a centrifugal supercharger. I've had two different Vortechs, one with straight cut gears (V1) and one with helical (V2). The straight cut were much louder, but the helical still had a decent whistle to it. The noise is a little more extreme because the gears are spinning really damn fast, but the same factors apply.

The 'normal whine' is pretty damn loud if you compare it to a rwd or fwd car.

And the OP asked for people's opinions about a problem he was having, so we're giving them based on our personal experience. That's how a forum works. So go chastise people somewhere else.

So did both WRX's I test drove. So did mine, from the day I bought it, especially under hard acceleration.

I know how a forum works.
I suppose I take things literally as they are written. I understand the difference of suggestion and what the majority of these replies are. Half the thread is guaranteeing that it's normal without ever hearing it! A better reply would carry a disclaimer of "...but I can't hear how loud your particular case actually is, so maybe it actually is bad..."

maybe I give people too much credit? I assume that most people bothering to make a thread about gear whine after reading threads on it being common may actually be concerned theirs is different.

Sorry to to rub you the wrong way.

Update

Main shaft came in today. Hopefully my car will be ready by tomorrow or Saturday. Irvine Subaru said they are going to be doing transmission bushings also. All under warranty.

Update

-

Spoke to Bryan at Irvine Subaru. He stated that they had a problem with one of the gears. He also said that my car should be done tomorrow. Well I called them yesterday and he said that they were just going o finish up today, that everything was already set to be put back in the car. He stated that it would be done today. We shall see what happens tomorrow. Thanks for all your responses. I am eager to hear what they will tell me next.

+1, very common whine with subarus. If its same whine most of us are thinking it is...its normal. You'll come to know and love how noisy our cars are eventually lol

Being 'not new' to the internet or forums, I'm very surprised you would give people that much credit lol. I'm just used to jeep forum where there is a post a day about "what lift should I get?" or "can I run XX" tires on a XX" lift?" without reading the 40 threads below theirs that answer the same question. This guy just took it to the extreme by doing little research and taking the car straight to the dealership.
