External Wastegates
Hey Guys I have another question for you all...
I have just started researching the great things that can be done with a EWG, but the thing is I do not understand how they work. I went to the manifesto that usually has everything but it did not have anything on these. Does the EWG work like an exhaust dump and just by-pass the whole DP, and cat back and go right out off the Up pipe? What is going on to connect it back to the DP and just by-pass the turbo or what? I am lost and would really like some help with this I just want to understand what it is and what it does. Thanks

When targeted boost is reached the wastegate opens letting hot exhaust gas out to slow down the turbine from overboosting, it doesnt totally bypass the d.p. it just diverts some of the u.p. flow out of the wastegate to control boost.

so does the EWG attach back to the DP or Cat-back... or does it work like a BOV and just release it out into atmosphere-- making it sort of like an exhaust dump when the turbo needs some time?

It depends on what type of setup your looking to purchase, Most aftermarket ewg setups vent atmospheric, I have mine vented this way cause it sounds pretty mean and yields more h.p. from what they say. but you can also have it rerouted back into the d.p. for a more stealthy application. I haven't found a kit yet that they sell like this alone, But i think the Perrin Gt35r turbo kit offers this setup.

Will this be an issue for emissions and inspections? also the grimmspeed spec EWG has a bracket that is suppose to hold down the turbo IWG shut so does that mean that none of the exhaust will go through the DP anymore if I run an atmospheric EWG?

It shouldn't be an issue for emissions because it only opens up under load at idle the ewg stays shut. Also the grimmspeed kit is a very good kit yes that bracket hold the wastegate flapper shut cause when you go with an external your basically moving the wastegate out of the turbo on to the u.p. for better boost control

my problem is that i have a 1995 legacy and it doesn't run on the OBD II system or whatever it is called... So they stick a hose in my tail pipe to see if everything is ok, But if my internal waste gate is blocked and everything is just being dumped out the external wastegate won't I fail emissions?

Stole this photo from Sefarious in the ebay turbo thread. If the internal waste flapper is welded shut (hole on the left), exhaust gases will still go through the turbo and into the downpipe/exhaust. |

I understand now but instead of it going through the internal waste gate it goes through the external one... and the external is atmospheric like a BOV it just shoots of the extra exhaust right?
