Default lightest setup...

i want to get the lightest set up i can for wheels...i want some good performance as well if that is possible...wheels i am thinking the ssr comps, i know those suckers are real light and they look pretty sweet as well...tires are the next question...i have heard the t1-s are light, but have heard mixed reviews...

basically, i want the best bang for my buck on tires, weight and performance wise...

thanks

My recommendations:

Best bang for your buck wheel = Kosei K1-TS (1 lb more than 17" SSR's at less than half the price)

Best bang for your buck tire = Toyo Proxes T1-S (2 lbs lighter than Pole Positions and $50 cheaper per tire)

Don't get the 070 take-offs from an STi,
Those suckers are heavy!

They are great, sticky tires with super stiff sidewall. I love mine, but if weight is you #1`priority, don't get them.

Check out the Kumho MX's. Depending on the size, they can be some very light tires.

....my 17x7.5" SSR Comps with 225/45 MX's weighed less than the stock 16's....by enough that as soon as I handled them both, it was glaringly apparent.
I didn't weigh either one but the SSR/MX combo is ~35-36 pounds per data found on several websites.....~22 pounds/tire and ~13 pounds/wheel.

picking tires should never be based on weight, if you want some great sticky tires...then you'll have to sacrifice some weight. if you think your tires will suck down your acceleration, then get power mods. you should never sacrifice grip for weight when talking about tires.

ssr comps in 17x7.5 are around 12lbs IIRC. ce's in the same size are around there as well. if you want a GREAT handling tire that is pretty light, check out the pirelli p-zero corsa tire :-P The new falken rt615s are lighter than the old azenis which were quite heavy.what are the tires used for? maybe another set of track rims may help?

yeah, it's true...but lets face it, the toyo is still lighter than the MX. but i would much rather have a good grippy tire than shave another 2lbs p/corner.

btw...according to tirerack and edgeracing figures (225/45/17)

MX = 23lbs
T1S = 20.9lbs
RS2 = 22.5lbs

I've never had a problem with the A032R's on the track, not even a hint, as a matter of fact, the hotter...the better.

The Corsa's you mentioned are 23 lbs each, and the TE37's in that size are 15 lbs each, giving you a total weight of 38 lbs.

are they? oh yeah, the tires were maybe 30-40% worn so that could be why. my mistake. I think it depends on where you take them and what your setup is as well if they heat up. friend was using them on his sti with cusco cage, apexi n1 dampers, lateral links, pretty much full suspension making 300whp and running 255 a032rs

I have a friend with an S2K that has TE37 Cup wheels that are 9 lbs each, but they're 16", and for racing-only application, think $3K each.

At any rate, the total weight at each corner bone stock is 38.5 lbs, so the goal is to stay in that range, anything under is gravy .

Is that 38.5 for the stock sti or wrx setup? I think my new setup-17x8ce's with sti tires weighs a little more than my te setup at ~40?

WRX, not sure about the STi, I'd have to do a little research, which is what I seem to be doing all day every day...lol.

The Bridgestone 070 weighs in at 27 lbs.
I can't remember what the BBS wheels weigh, something like 16 lbs.

My MX's in 235/45/17 are listed @ 20lbs, and RPF1's are 15lbs. The scales agree at 35lbs total.

My setup is pretty light, running TE's in 16X7.5 ~ 11.5 lbs, 225/50/16 Bridgestone S02's- these are the oe rear fitment for the S2000's. They are very wide "225's", bordering on 245 width, weight is 25 lbs. I've done a couple of track days and a couple of autox's (one in the wet) w/ them and thus far am very impressed- dry grip for a non R compound is amazing, wet grip is good, they don't get greasy when hot, sidewall is very stiff- worth the couple of extra lbs IMO.

I ran T1S's and the Pirelli Nero (summer), both light tires- the Nero weighed in 1 lb heavier than the T1, both good tires, but not S02 "good". My biggest complaint w/ the T1S was the sidewall- it was a little soft, no doubt some of the weight saving is in the sidewall.

The T1R should be hitting the market soon here in the US, be curious to see what Toyo did w/ the sidewall.

The S02 is an outstanding tire until it gets some wear on it, then the wet traction just goes to total hell, which is the reason most people think the S2000 is an ass-happy car, but the problem is corrected with a set of S03's (at the expense of dry grip of course).

I looked into this for my WRX wagon. The best 'bang for the buck" lightweight combination was the stock 16 inch WRX rims and Toyo T1S tires. The stock rims are light for the price (16lbs? I may be waaaay off). I could get lighter aftermarket rims, but with the difference in $$$, I could get a lot of suspension mods. The performance is great, the unsprung wieght is very noticable on acceleration and braking compared to 17 inch Rotas with Faulkens (but the Faulken have better grip). Very stealth. A set of used WRX rims seems to run $300-400.
I love the T1S. Have driven many fast highway miles. Good in the rain. Don't go in the snow! Wears fairly fast, but then I push in the corners. Not a good gravel / rough road tire. Trams a bit and is noiser than stock, but not nearly as noisy as the Faulkens. They seem to be very pressure sensitive. Mine were 'bouncy' until I got the pressures right for my style of driving. Then I check them when the outside temp changes. They get slippery when cold (40F). I'm getting a 2nd set to replace the Faulkens.

T1-S's may be light, but what they gain in lightness, they make up for in lack of traction.

on the track this is true on the T1S - its not a track tire

on the street, one would never know the difference

not sure how the new T1R (which replaced the T1S) weighs....we have a bunch but I did not weigh them yet
