the server was hacked the 3rd and so it was reset to may 3 at 5am...I got your cup comment and all that.
The little getrag is just the test dummie trans for a prototype I've been working on while the production trans details are down the road. It is a suitable substitute that simply needs a LSD. I was saying send a subie sequential on over |

I'm still shopping around. I can't find an off the shelf unit that will be sufficient. Closest is a Quaife and that's $10k pretty much complete. Just need to make a bellhousing for it.
I've talked with many many many driveline suppliers and none are interested without $xxx, xxx up front. This when I decided we might just pick up and aftermarket gearset and make our own housing for the application, which opens up many avenues but adds to testing load for our already small engineering team. maybe we should move this to email |

I've been working lately on getting everything ready for paint. All of the body work is finished and I'm finally done spraying primer. I have to look into making some molds for some of the fiberglass parts, but it's ready for paint. I'll get some mew pictures up some time this week. I just realized how behind I am in picture updates.
Matt: The day after I talked to you about the diff I had someone call and basically "give" me a diff to try. When/if it fails, I will be calling you for one of your "Pro" diffs. I appreciate you offering to help me out, and I'm sure I'll be talking to you in the future. |

Quick update with everything in primer. Just waiting on the wheels to be made so I can test-fit everything before I final sand and start painting everything.

This may have been covered, but will this bell housing and engine cradle work with a Cayman or a 997 Carrera chassis? I like this option and the Cayman deserves more power with an air to water intercooler and E85.
Thanks |

Short answer is... In theory, the adapter kit and engine cradle "should" work in the Cayman chassis as long as it's older than 2008. This will be confirmed soon after the test car is complete. The 996/997 chassis is completely different from the doors back so the engine cradle would have to be different. |

As a true Porsche fanatic from birth, I have always hated the look of the Boxster. But that car, with the GT2 front end, the roof scoop, wide fenders, wing and exhaust, looks absolutely incredible, badass, menacing, it looks like a Porsche should. I cannot wait to see this car wrapped up and I truly hope I get to see the car in person one day, as I imagine these pictures barely do it justice.

Giken has been using Chris Musante as their Porsche posterchild because he set a couple of track records last year and they'd like to take credit for it. But Chris and I know the truth and his track records were only possible with my help and the two custom ratio dog boxes that we put together for him. He would have gotten those records whether or not he had my diff, Giken's diff, or Kaaz's diff in his car. It was my gearkits and his monster air cooled 3.8l engine that got him those records. And he's a bad ass driver. Anyone who can take a 1976 911 targa, reskin it, leave it air cooled and hand 997 Cup Cars their arse is a rock star driver. Assuming that I am correct and that it is in fact an Giken that was donated to you, my unsolicited advice for your car and chassis would be to restack it and loosen it up a fair bit. Even with how much power you are going to be making, the initial stack that LSD comes with from the factory is super aggressive and something I would only really consider appropriate for a drift car. Set it at their 1.5 way ramp and pin setting and double up a couple sets of their friction discs to make it lock less. If that in any way doesn't make sense, just to a search for Cobb's article on how they restacked the Giken in their Time Attack car. It's step by step with pictures and I think it appears on Motoiq or one of those sites. Regards, Matt |

You'll have to talk to CMS or Albins about the gears for that box. We won't touch that useless POS gearbox. At least the 987 gearboxes are rebuildable by normal technicians and withouth a 50 ton press. And they can be rebuilt more than once. The interference pressfit gears on that G86-20 gearbox is a major liability and one that has kept us from even considering supporting the box with motorsports parts.
You'd have to redesign the whole gearbox internals including an all new ring and pinion and mainshaft. It would be a $12-15k kit at the cheapest considering what would need to be included. |

I know, I already had that talk with Bobby last time I went to CMS. I'm not going to abandon the G82/20 yet because A. It's cheap and I already have one, and B. I want to see how much abuse it can take because almost every person I talk to wants to know "how much power they can put through their stock gearbox". There's no reason I can't "upgrade" to the G87 later if it proves to be benificial and more "upgradable' then the G86, but for now, I'm gonna stick with what's easier/cheaper.
Trust me, if this weren't a "test car" and money weren't a concern, I would have CMS build me a bad-ass inverted modern G50 variant. Last edited by kcpaz; 05-19-2011 at 05:02 PM. |

The G86/20 can take plenty of abuse. It's a beefy as hell R/P set and is basically a midengine G96/00. It's a strong gearbox and as long as you don't shred the 2nd gear synchro it will take all the abuse you can throw at it with respect to power. It's recently started to see quite a bit of favour with the midengine v8 powered kit car crowd for this reason.
Basically, you could say that it's a G50 gearbox that you can't rebuild more than once because of the press fit gears. Not a concern when they are cheap and easily available. But as you have seen, it is a concern when it comes to a manufacturer who wants to be able to make full production quantities of something and have it be sellable. That is the only reason my company is supporting the G87 and not the G86. It's purely a market decision. For what you are doing and how you intend to use the car, if you can live with the gearing and it being synchronized, it's a real winner of a gearbox. You rarely hear about people blowing up G86/20 gearboxes, and because the rules allow them to, Deman Motorsports runs the G86/20 in their 987 chassis Boxster Grand Am race cars because it's a bit beefier than the G87 and in stock form the gearing is also a bit better. Now he's just got to get his car back together for Lime Rock in 2 weeks... The full race with an interview with Rick will be played on Speed this coming weekend. |
