Default 4pot lower retention pin almost fell out

Car has been sitting for a while. I change the car battery today, drive it around the block, park, do a once over and find this.

The lower retention pin is halfway out of the caliper. I push it back in, throw the car on ramps and find that the lower pin was no longer held in place by the clip.

How common is this issue? I did a search and couldn’t find anyone else with the same problem. I’m just trying to figure out what may have caused it in order to avoid the same issue in the future.

Shouldn't the clip ends go through the pins?

I think he was showing that it fell out of the pin.

It was probably not installed properly. There's no way that clip is undoing itself under normal use

Yes, the clip should be going through the pin. I just snapped a photo of what I found when I went underneath, I didn’t take an after photo of when I fixed it.

I got the brakes installed at a reputable shop about 11 months ago. I find it hard to believe that the pin wouldn’t have popped out in that time if it was a botched job. Granted, the car does sit a lot and I’ve only put on close to maybe 1k miles in that time.

Either way, this thing has me paranoid and got me ordering a caliper hardware kit to leave in the glovebox in preparation for when it decides to fail.

I have seen them fail after going through the rust belt...otherwise only other way was either not pushed in or not put in at all
