stupid front plate, need it in massachusetts
Is there any way that we can legaly get around having a front plate on the car?
I know older registrations here im MA, have green lettering, and are only required to have the rear plate. But with a new purchase, or current registration transfer, you go to the red lettering 2 plate set up. I have taken off my front plate and keep it in the glove for now. It would get it the way of my soon to have FMIC. (plus its fugly to me.) Anyone have similar gripes or any ideas? thanx all

If you could sell plates, the coveted "green plates" would sell for big money on Ebay.

put a bolt into one hole in the front, then shear it off. keep the one remaining good bolt, the broken peice and the other plate in your car. if you do actually get pulled over for it (unlikely unless they're looking for an excuse) or if they notice (again unlikely unless they're looking for an excuse) just explain to them that a bolt broke and you were going to get it fixed, if they ask for proof, you have it

Park a few cars in your front lawn, register with the state as a car dealer and get some dealer plates. Then you can drive with only the plate in the back.
You might be breaking a few other laws on the way to that though.... -BrianK |

You could also do what habitual speeders in Japan do to avoid photo radar -- put hinges on the plate so it folds back into your bumper at highway speeds. Plenty of flow to the intercooler and it flops back into position when you're pulled

not a bad idea with the hinge, but on my rex there will be no room to fold in, once the FMIC is in place. I am going with the APS cobb front mount

Just take the plate off and don't run it. I have been running around without front plates in my Miata. Have not got in trouble yet (I put it on when I get my car insepcted)
Hmm Now that I have jinxed myself, I will probably be pulled over tomorrow. |

New Plates
It's $15 dollars for new plates. The ticket for failure to show front plate is a $50 dollar fine. You can run without a front plate and then just say it was stolen and pay 15 bucks for new plates. I ran without for awhile and did get nabbed for it but along with about 9 other surchargeable offenses.

well this is just another stupid thing massachusetts does.
Its illegal not to have the front plate on if you have the newer red lettering style, But it's ok if you are under the old green lettering. Its illegal to tint your rear window darker than 35% if it a sedan of sport car, but its ok if you are driving an suv, truck,or van.(which makes no sense seeing how the point is for visual safety imparment for law enforcement). lets see how many people with weapons could you hide in the back of a sedan or a vette? Its illegal for most sedans and sport cars to have an exhaust louder than 105db, But its ok to have a cement truck or a harley hog to have like 2000db I know I will stop beotching now. Sorry had to vent |

If you don't run a front plate you can get a ticket. I know I've recieved one. The bad part is that I actually had it on the dash of my car at the time, and the bottom of the plate slipped just below the black trim at the base of the windshield.

The fine massachusetts state trooper:monkey: told me this 105db. I have contacted a few inspection stations and they don't have any idea what is the actual # limit. They say that it can't be altered in anyway from stock:monkey: That fine law enforcement official also refused to tell me if idle db, or higher rpm db's were used. He was basically busting my b@lls. However, he did have a calibrated db meter. So something is going on out here. |

Our two cars both have the single greens... I can't believe how many people get new plates with every new car instead of transferring their old ones (cheaper).

If you have a problem with motor vehicle laws, contact your legislators and work to have them changed.
If you don't want to do that, you have three choices. 1) Don't modify your car, run it stock with the plates in the right places, run it legal, and you won't get tickets for it. 2) Modify your car illegally (non-stock exhaust, no front plate, tint, etc.) and be prepared for tickets. Contest or pay, but don't complain when you get them. 3) Move to another state where the regulations are more to your liking. We all deal with these things every day. I've been warned for "modified exhaust" here in NH... it comes with the territory. Again -- to change it, contact your legislators, or attempt to find legal exemptions for your vehicle. /Andrew |

Tranjo,
I suggest doing what I saw almost all of the cars w/ FMIC in Japan did: put the license plate offcenter. I don't see why it would be illegal, and it wouldn't be that hard to mount. Granted it'd be a little ugly, but it's better than having the license plate restrict the air flow to your FMIC. Also, did you get pulled over for your tint as a primary offense, i.e. committing no other crimes at all? How dark is your tint? Thanks, -Sam |

yes I got stopped for the rear window appearing to be to dark(which it is) but they can never tint meter it because it's a fixed window, doesn't roll up or down or oped side to side.
He fined me for all my windows which are all legal 35%. My rear is dark I think like 8% limo style, I will fight the fine. He also told me that seeing how I had no paperwork proving the tint was 35% I was screwed. He never metered any of my windows. I now carry proof of where I got the tint done, and what the percentage is. But it looks too good on my ride, so I am going to have to deal with harassments. The price we pay |

Has anyone ever been pulled over and cited just because they don't have a front plate?
As I mentioned in a previous post, I can't stand front plates. I have mine sitting in my trunk, still attached to the mounting bracket, which "fell off" in a car wash. It's actually a fairly believable story, as I've seen numerous font plates bent out and mangled from car wash brushes. I have never been pulled over for lack of a front plate. I can understand a cop giving you a ticket if they've pulled you over for something else, but not just the plate... Maybe I'm just lucky. -Brian |

If my scanner was working I'd scan my "failure to display plate" ticket. You CAN and WILL eventually get ticketed. Our cars aren't exactly inconspicuous you know!

-Brian edit: I also drove around, unticketed, for 4 years in a maroon 1995 240sx with a pretty loud exhaust. That car wasn't too inconspicuous. Guess I'm lucky. Last edited by KD7000; 07-01-2002 at 07:05 PM. |
