Product design at Apple, the holy grail of design jobs?
So I have been contacted by Apple and had some preliminary phone talks with them about a design position on their iPod/iPhone team. I fit their bill, and they are pushing it forward. Certainly there is a long way to go before I come close to getting a job... but in the event that I had the chance, whats your take?
Certainly it would be a lot of money, but it would be a relocation across the country to the SF area, which I am not super keen on. I would leave my family (i am a 26 y/o guy, with a serious gf) and the area I know... for what many may consider the epitomy of product design positions. Certainly it would be hard work, long hours and many trips to China, but considering how widespread and loved their products are it would be a major career booster. Would you guys go forward full steam for the money/prestige/resume bullet point of working there, or consider the personal options even in the face of a such a seemingly big opportunity? I am a little surprised at how hesitant I am on the whole thing, living life for a job (however elite it may be) has never been something I wanted to do. I am also working on a product design/engineer position at Hasbro, which would be my first choice most likely. Part of me just has a hard time going back on things I told myself I didn't want to do, even if it is for one of the most elite design teams around.

Well, working at Apple is said to be incredibly trying, incredibly stressful, and yet incredibly rewarding. You will be working long hours under huge pressure and probably getting yelled at a lot for being a complete failure, but Apple employees tend to be hugely loyal despite all that.
Will definitely have to be a decision you make for yourself, I'm sorry to say... |

yes, do it, absolutely.
The girl can come with you or you can just find a new one. You're young and don't have kids, take advantage of any opportunity you can. the 20's are for working hard and establishing your career, your 30's and 40's are spend enjoying the fruits of your labor when you were younger. The rest is cruise control after that |

Windows is burying Apple in sales right now, and the Android platforms and ATT appear to be doing everything they can to bury the IPhone despite its popularity. I look at Apple the way I look at men in skin tight jeans and messenger bags...

It's not a matter of not being able to leave my family and friends behind... it would just be the sellout point of living for a job and career advancement. I have friends that do this in other industries (finance) and I have told myself that enjoyment of my life and happiness would outweigh those type of things.
But if it means it puts me on the fast track to being an all star product designer and upping my salary 50%+, it complicates the matter |

This sounds like one of those decisions that if you turn it down you'll always wonder "what if".
Even if it sucks ass and you find yourself moving back home 6 months later, at least you'll move on knowing you gave it a shot. |

Are you a big fan of Apple and their products? Do you get excited when they announce the next gen is coming out for (insert Apple product here)?
Pretty much the people who tend to really love working there despite the challenges are the kind that love Apple. If you aren't an Apple kind of guy, its likely to be just another job. You are young and have no wife/kids so now would be the time to take the job and work there 2-3 years for the experience/resume bullet if you are going to do it though. Unless your Hasbro job is very likely and on the horizon in this calendar year, I personally would take the Apple job and deal with whatever for a few years just to get the career benefit. |

Trust me. A fun/rewarding career is worth far more than you can imagine. If you don't do it, you'll regret it for the rest of your life.

Do it. I moved 1,500 miles away from home for a similar opportunity. I don't regret it, and you probably won't either.

I hate apple. I'd do it in a heart beat. That's an epic opportunity that you should not turn down. Drag the girl along if she is that awesome - if not, have you seen what trolls around SF?
HOT BITCHES And you would be designing all the products THEY are GETting WET for. Win (scenery (chicks)), Win (prestigious design team), Win ($) To clerify. Hot Bitches and WinX3 |

If the Hasbro job comes through I would take that over any opportunity in the world. That would be my ideal job without question, as I am a transformers fan boy and customize them in my spare time. I want to be the head man for that brand.
anything else pretty much, Apply may trump it hands down |

I think you'd be a fool not to. Opportunities like this don't come around often (venture I say once in a lifetime ).
As someone else said, the worst that happens is you hate it and move back home (though I would imagine if you left your current job it wouldn't necessarily be there when you get back and you'd have to find one). But its stil worth it. Good luck! |
