Default Speedometer not working Help!

Code: P0502 (from auto zone obd II scanner)
Symptoms: Dead speedometer, rpm not passing 4500 rpm (limp mode), radiator fan constantly running.

I took the car to a dealership and they said it is ECM logic issue
The service rep said they checked the speed sensor and it is okay. The service statement said they my car has down pipe and ECM logic has been changed. Therefore, it's not warrantable. No repair has been made.

Is this another dealership BS to deny warranty work or something wrong with my AP?

Umm I think you forgot to unplug your green test connectors?

It's unplugged. I've been running stg 2 for almost a year w/o any issues and it just happened last week.

It's throwing code P0502(speed sensor low input) and dealer service rep is saying the speed sensor it okay.
They gave me a loaner, but I ended up paying for it since the problem was not warratable. Is it really my ECU causing this problem?

Could it be speed sensing gear inside the transmission?
Do you have any other idea?

If the speed sensor is working and the speedometer registers speed when it is spun, then the drive gear inside the transmission (I'm assuming you have a manual trans) is stripped. That could IN NO WAY be caused by modifiying your car, unless your transmission has been disassembled. I'm not saying that is is common, *cough* yes it is *cough* but we have heard of it at Saab...

Oh, and the ECM has absolutely NO control over speedometer function on your car. (again, this only applies to a manual transmission car) There is a direct wire from the speed sensor that branches to the ECM, speedometer, and the cruise control module. If you took the ECM out and threw it away, and towed the car at 50mph with the key on, the speedometer will still read 50mph. The tech who worked on your car probably rides the short bus and has his mama wipe his arse for him.

Take the car to a dealer that knows what the Foxtrot they are doing. WHEN the other dealer fixes it under warranty, contact SOA and politely ask them to refund your money spent for the loaner.

I do have a manual transmission.
The service rep at libertyautocity said that my ECM is not getting any signal from the speed sensor due to the bad software program (blaming ecu reflash) as well as radiator fan issue. If it's not the speed sensor, it could be a gear inside the transmission?

I'll try the other dealer around here.

Thank you for the information!

my cars speedometer went out last year. i took it to SOS (yeah, i know) and they tried to blame it on my short shifter and they said the problem was in the tranny. my car was completely stock except for the s/s and i told them i wouldn't stop arguing and wouldn't leave until they fixed it under warranty. i kept trying to explain how its nearly impossible and they finally fixed it under warranty. otherwise, the total bill would've been $800; something ridiculous. good luck!

Hopefully, the other deal fix it under warranty. Otherwise, I'll take it to a local tuner shop for repair.

Check the ground strap going from the trans to the firewall (next to the dogbone) sometimes they corrode and get a little wacky

Waited almost 2 weeks for the speed sensor. The worst part is the problem is not the speed sensor, it's the speedometer gear inside transmission and the dealer won't fix it under warranty due to aftermarket modification. What the f$#*! They knew I had DP and would fix the speed sensor under warranty, but not the speedometer gear!

Just called the SOA and they will get back to me.

And that kids is why i don't and never will work for Subaru.

Sorry but a down-pipe is NOT going to destroy a speedo drive gear in a transmission. Remember if you are lightly modified good luck, SOA is pretty useless.

The dealer service rep was referring to warranty bulletin #01-156-03.
I need to return the loaner and ressolve the issue with SOA. I don't get it why they would replace speed sensor under warranty, but not the speedometer gear????

Fight it out with SOA. They need to prove that your modifications caused the speedometer gear to fail, not just "because we say so". You could put 600hp through your trans, or tow a boat and ever hurt the speedo gear, it does not receive drivetrain load.

It is a known issue, and SOA does not want to own up to it. MANY unmodified 9-2x models are having this concern.

Settle for nothing less than 100% warranty coverage.

Fighting it out with SOA's room full of lawyers that wait for this kinda stuff is kinda like pushing a rope, no matter how hard you try it gets you no where.

You are right in your cause, but you're facing a very up hill battle.

SOA was supposed to call me, but never called me. They needed get information from the dealer. Anyway, the dealer service manager called and said that SOA told him to continued to work on my car. It will be covered under warranty for now.

This sort of experience makes me stay away from Subaru.

Thank you so much for the information!
