Might be your pp in lightroom, but the shadows are too dark. Might be the settings too. f16 seems excessive, though 8 secs at a cloudy dusk seems plenty.

Yep, it was in raw and I tend to go a bit too dark on the shadows, thanks for the input

What were you trying to achieve with 8.0s ***402;/16 ISO100? With those settings you had plenty of room to expose properly yet still underexposed.

What do you want... big twins? Slammed rally cars? Classic interiors? I've got it.

Nothing specifically, while I've been using a dslr for quite some time I really don't know a whole lot about setting up a photo (I understand what f stops, exposure, and iso do) so I'm pretty much a newbie on it

That's a good start, you have basic understanding how cameras work. Your next step is understand the composition of your photo. Look up golden rules, or rule of thirds.

^^^ Yeah, I'm not understanding the use of such a small aperture. Even if he was trying to get the background in focus there isn't even enough there that f/8 couldn't have handled. It just seems like an odd combonation

ok, i do realize in hindsite that 8 seconds was overkill (kind of experimenting to see how the photos looked) i was a bit too excited mabey to have finally found my tripod. but other than for purposes for depth of field and if you want anything (such as a car driving by) to be blurred i dont know the why on exposure versus aperature. i did go back on one of the pictures and bring up the shadows
my concern is that the black areas such as the wheels end up looking somewhat washed out, also here is a before/after on another picture to show what it looked like before using lightroom (and it was shot in RAW) |

The picture with the shadows brought up looks much better. Look at all of the detail that can be seen now! Sometimes bringing up the shadows with turn stuff gray but you can try to balance that out with adjust the blacks or manually going in with the adjustment brush to darken your desired areas. The best thing to do is go on Youtube and watch different videos on what you want to learn. I'm constantly learning new things and going back to edit old pics with new and improved techniques and experience. Keep at it!
I'm a newb myself but you will get a lot of help and great advice here. Last edited by INKMAN; 05-03-2013 at 09:44 PM. |

first thank you everybody for the input, anything to help me learn to get better shots is awesome, also a note, im using a nikon d80 and i always shoot in manual, not ap/av priority, but based on what yall are say i probably need to conciously give my shots just a bit more exposiour and i see what you mean on f16, i used to take everything on the lowest possible f stop because i wasnt using a tripod so i wanted to use the fastest shutter speed as i could. next time i shoot ill try staying closer to f8 unless i want a lot of depth of field.
also, this thread is super motivating to get out and take some pictures, everybody on here takes some beautiful shots |

my recommendation would always be to err on the side of over exposure rather than underexposure because it's much easier to take pixels away than it is to add pixels. I love the control that LR gives you when it comes to shadows and highlights, so fixing shots that are properly exposed or just slightly overexposed is not a problem. Any time you need to bump the exposure slider up past 1 full stop in LR, you're going to be venturing into that danger zone where the computer starts adding pixels and that's where you'll get that nasty grain in the shadows. I didn't look at your exposure, but if you were shooting at iso 100, it wouldn't hurt to bump it to 200 and go from there, it'll give you much more flexibility when it comes to aperture and shutter. I know a lot of photographers don't like to review every photo after they've just shot them, but when the subject is still like that and I have total control over the situation, I'll literally pause for 30 seconds after each snap and make sure that my exposure is proper and figure out what I need to adjust for the next one.
