Default Tires with linear/progressive breakaway

Is there a way to predict which tires have a more linear or progressive break away at the limit, as opposed to sudden falling over the cliff of traction?

My Goodyear F1 GS D3 seem to be nicely progressive and give you lots of warning that traction is "going awaaAAAAAYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I'm actually finding my 215/45/17 stock RE92s aren't as bad as everyone makes them out to be (but still not great). EDITED

Or maybe you guys can suggest tires with more progressive breakaway.

In our testing the Bridgestone tire line is consistently more progessive in their beak away characteristics than most others ... but, there are always exceptions

I found my Toyo T1-S to be progressive.

The Azenis RT-215 is definitely NOT progressive.

Yes. I found the RE92's to be quite progressive in their loss of traction, and they definitely let you know when you were approaching their limit. The ultimate grip wasn't so good, they had soft sidewalls, and had their obvious limitations, but they were communicative in my recollection.

Try bumping up the tire pressures and see if you get better results. Also, you need to *listen* to them!

+100

Most people find the RE92's extremely progressive and easy to drive at the limit, including most automotive publications when testing the wrx (if that holds more weight).

I find it very strange the OP found otherwise. Its a very easy tire to drive hard on....low limits...but very progressive.

A lot of Suby driving instructors like them for beginners as they are so predictable...

Hmmm.. you guys are making me doubt my feelings. I admit, with less than 2k miles, I really haven't had that many opportunities to push it.

Maybe I'm mistaking the low limit and noisy protest as sudden break away.

...a large, empty, wet, tarmac parking lot would prove VERY useful to you, I think

Alright, the other day I found an empty, wet parking lot. I wasn't raining at the time, but it had recently so it was wet.

I rescind my previous statement. The RE92s are pretty progressive... they just suddenly scream a lot, but manage to maintain some grip. Soft, comfy sidewalls though.

I just autocrossed the RE92's a couple weeks ago, and will again this weekend. I agree that they are very progressive and pretty easy to drive at the limit... you get a some chirp->squeak->squeal->squall->back off. Don't grip that much, but it's not that bad and they can be fun.

Pfft, nobody autocrosses on re-92s. I don't believe you.

Haha

Mind, were you too lazy to swap tires or something? Waktasz has got a point... why would you waste 3 runs? haha j/k ;P

Combination of laziness and the fact that it was 29 degrees and constant 30mph winds all day long... I wasn't sure how well the sticky summer RE070's would do. But, turns out that it's still beneficial to run R-comps even when it's below freezing.

Strangely enough, it was very educational. When I first autocrossed the car on RE92, I got so frustrated that when I turned the wheel in it would result in the plow of death. This was mainly due to my inability to comprehend the advantage of a gradual, smooth steering input, and my spastic, adrenalized-beginner 'maximum attack' autocrosser syndrome.

Then I tried the RE070, and that was a sticky enough tire to recover very quickly from my binary inputs. More of a bandaid than a fix. But then I attended an AutoX school, and some concepts started to sink in... and after I put the RE92 back on for the winter, I found that they responded MUCH better to smooth inputs. They are obviously not that sticky, but I was able to 'hold the line' on almost all my runs, without blowing them wide (and losing seconds) with the plow of death.

Will you be there Sat? We can have a RE92 showdown! I think you pwned me at the last one, though.

Yea I'll be there.

I had you by about .7sec but you out-Paxed me. ESP is tough to Pax well in...maybe I'll come back to STU...it's still up in the air right now. Boost is so much fun.

RE92 may be progressive in the dry, but wet seems to be a different story. Once sliding in the wet, they seem progressive, but that transition from not slipping to slipping while wet seem to be a big gap. Dry, they seem ok. Not great, but ok. Wet... ugh. It feels like prius in the low rolling resistance tires.

Try a set of FUZION ZRi's! These tires are made for drifting and very fun to play with. (Cheep too!) With my limited driving skills they are a blast. They run a little narrow/small for there size. Oh, Made by Bridgestone too.
If you Auto-X, I would keep looking. Not bad, but not the best. For the $ an A+ in my book.

Good luck.
