How to apply touch up paint?
I ordered some paint from a car dealer, should be getting it tomorrow. Was wondering about the procedure and technique of applying the paint. I'm a total newbie at this, so detailed instructions appreciated. What equipment do I need, do I need to do any prep work to the car before applying the paint?

I'm not sure about "prep" work but I would suggest using a toothpick or a really fine model brush to apply it. Less is more when it comes to this.

This is something to do with grate care, it will take a long time. I just did my car, your going to repair chips right? hobby knife 900 grit or more sand paper #2 pencil,or a spot sander, wax remover, paint, water, a good eye and a steady hand. Glue sandpaper to the eraser to fit, with a none water salable glue. With the knife clean the chip, if there rust you'll have to get all of it out. Use the wax remover next to get all the wax out, once clean put the paint in the chip let dry. If the chip paint isn't up to the top of the rest of the car use top coat / clear coat to bring it up you can get that anywhere they sell touch up paint after it's above the rest of the car and dry use your pencil with the sandpaper to sand it flat, by rolling the sander in your fingers, with a steady flow of water. Then wax it don't polish it for a week or so to give it time to set that's about it. It will look like water spot untell you polish it out. Oh Ya replace the brush it to the paint as fast as you can it get thick fast. good luck

touch up equipment
Griot's Garage sells brushes for touching up, they are very small and from what I have heard they work great. Also Eastwood has a catalog for every kind of restoration item you could ever need. They have the same brushes as Griot's and sell them in a kit with other items to effect a touch up.http://www.griotsgarage.com/search.j...=28&search.y=5

I got my my paint and instructions from www.paintscratch.com. I put it on on the open trunk area where paint was chipping and it matches nice, the hood I want to ensure it is a close to perfect. What is a good grit (1000?) and how to sand, and get the paint and clear coat to be flush and seamless? |

I got microbrushes!
The brushes Griot's Garage sells are also used in dentistry to apply bonding agents to teeth. They are called "microbrushes." Funny thing... several years ago, I discovered their use as touch-up paint brushes. They work GREAT.
Ask your dentist for a "microbrush." Many of us use them, although I'm betting some don't. I buy them by the hundreds. If it doesn't get too out of hand with requests, I'd be happy to mail one to any of you for nothing. PM me with your snail mail address. OK.. don't swamp me with requests PLEASE. (I have a baaad feeling about this! ) Mike Last edited by fastwrx; 10-15-2001 at 09:56 PM. |
