Rebuild turbo with compressor wheel from 87-88 t-bird
It just came to my attention that the 87-88 Ford Thunderbird turbo coupes came with the IHI-RHB52 turbo that's the same as the one used on the 91-94 Legacy turbos, except it has a larger compressor wheel. Has anyone tried to swap this compressor into their turbo? I know Skidazzle had his turbo rebuilt by a place that does work on t-birds and had an even larger compressor (a t-bird compressor upgrade) swapped into his turbo, and now he can run 12-14 psi (the most I can run with the stock turbo is 7 psi on my EJ25).
Any ideas/info?

Tim, I was always under the assumption that when doing things with different wheels and that type of stuff, the whole turbo must be rebalanced, hence, just get a turbo shop to do it for you.
I know what you mean about the turbos though. At 12.5psi mine will only maintain 10psi tops, but I have a full 3" exhaust that has nothing but an N1 so I'd imagine that helps a bit Any idea what a place like Turbonectics charges to do some work like that plus a rebuild? |

Shik,
Yeah, I would definately send it away to have this work done. I was very excited when Michael (Skidazzle) told me about what he had done to his turbo, and I sent another mail off to him asking where and how much this cost him, but he hasn't gotten back to me. I just sent a mail to turbo city, who advertises RHB52 upgrades for the SVO and Thunderbird on their website, and I'll post the info when they get back to me. I'm not going to contact turbonetics because they never answer their mail, and I'm always stuck here at work, so I can't really call. |

Tim, thanks for the info. For a practically brand new turbo that you know is going to bolt right on(since it's the same turbo ), that doesn't sound like a bad price to me. Keep us posted on what Turbo City has to say.
Alex, an RX6!? Jeez man, we're not all millionaires If I had that kind of money to sink into my Legacy Turbo... I probably wouldn't be driving a Legacy Turbo Dave, true, they do last forever it seems, but the moment you decide 10-12 psi is not enough anymore, you will be concerned Plus the fact that a bit larger turbo can flow a bit more(and cooler) air which is better for the motor AND performance, a win-win situation |

12psi enough? Bah humbug! I bought two TDO4's, a '97 & '99 from AUS spec WRX's, cheap. I got the '97 TDO4 along with an intercooler from the same car for $320 shipped! The '99 came with a clean bill of health from MRT for $280, but it only has 9000 kilometers on it
I am planning on running them sequentially along with a intercooler from a Ford powerstroke diesel mounted where the hood used to be Sorry, kinda squirrly tonight! The TDO4 will need a bit of work to fit, the intake housing will need to be reclocked and a 90 degree elbow needs to be fitted to clear the intake manifold. The intercooler needs work as well although it is larger than the earlier models. The BOV needs to be relocated, the inlets need to be relocated, the outlet needs to be relocated, other than that it is a direct swap |

From Skidazzle:
"I got the work done at Majestic Turbo in TX. For the rebuild, new exhaust wheel (mine was shot... and was cause for rebuild...), and upgraded compressor wheel was $700. Normal rebuild would have been around $200, but only includes new bearings, etc." |

Does anyone here run somekind of an upgraded turbo on their Legacy's? Like a RHF5 series turbo or maybe even a RX6.

Most of us will get 150-200k miles ouf of the stockers so even rebuilding is not yet common.
I'd like to hear about replacments and upgrades but i'm not too concerned as mine only has 88k on it. |

Turbo city said they can't do an upgrade on our turbos. But majestic turbo in Texas does, I'm going to give them a call next week.
