Default EJ20G crank but no start after driven and sat for awhile.

I have a swapped GC8 with an EJ20g in it.

It has the typical hard cold-start(sometimes have to burp the throttle to get it up to idle) but once it starts up it runs great.

Sometimes, not all the time, when I drive it just around town or over the hill to boise(about 30 mins from my place), it won't start after I let it sit for awhile. It will crank and it receives fuel but 5 times outta 10 it wont start. Sometimes I get lucky and it will start up after hitting the gas pedal and cranking it for 15-25 seconds a few times. But lately it won't fire back up.

If I push start it, it fires right up. And once the other day it was doing it so I unplugged one of the injectors, cranked it, it fired up then I plugged the injector back in and it ran great.

I have no real reasoning for unplugging the injector other than the previous owner telling me to give that a try.

Today it did it again. So I tried unplugging the injector to start it and no luck.

It seems and smells like it's just fludding it.

Fuel pump primes, no CEL's, I replaced the crank sensor and that did it no good.

Also replaced the plugs a few weeks ago, but it was doing that problem before all that too.

Seems to do it more when it's hot out.

I have no idea on what it can be and some people have told me that the OBD1 EJ20G's just do that because when they turn off they stay closed loop or something like that? I dont remember exactly what they told me.

So:
IACV?
Cam angle sensor?
Injectors?
I'm lost

Any help is greatly appreciated!! I need to get this problem figured out.

Thank you very much.

I had similar issues. For me, cold start was normal, hot/warm starts was either off or on. In my case it was the Cam and/or Crank sensor. I replace both at the same time, so I can't say which one fixed it. I think what happens is that the ECU misses the first couple ignition trigger events, but is ok with spraying the injectors and it quickly floods out. When you roll start it, the ECU doesn't see the starter signal and doesn't send the initial priming pulse.

Sweet i'll give that a shot! Thank you very much! Do you know what USDM cam sensor is compatable with the EJ20G cam sensor? and is there two crank sensors? Crank angle and crank positioning? That's what the guys at autozone told me ha. I already replaced the crank positioning sensor the other day with one from an 02-03 wrx.

I cleaned the Cam sensor and it didnt seem to do anything for the car.

I will clean the IACV and do some MAF cleaner on the MAF to see if that helps. I'm not quite sure on what ECU I have and I have no idea who did the wiring.

The car never did it when I first got it. The warmer it got outside the more it started to do it. It still runs really good when running.

Just replace it and move on. I didn't expect cleaning to do any good

If it's not the cam sensor does anyone else know what it might be?

Try the coolant temp sensor the the ecu, if its not starting back up after it ran for a while then the sensor may have gone bad. If thats not it i dont know what it is, that would be my guess. Im guessing the car is still thinking its cold when its not which is y it runs great when its cold.

It is never a bad idea to replace these old sensors. The coolant sensor is cheap, but a PITA to change.

I work as a Honda mechanic. We have some issues with later civics and some of the S2000 with similar concern. Do a fuel pressure check, turn vehicle off, Plug off return line. If your pressures decrease you have a "internal" leak. Or better put the injector can be leaking into cylinder. So it is just flooding the engine. So when you unplug the connector for the injector it just helps reduce the fuel going in, during a flooded condition for starting. I could be wrong, but does not cost money, and easy to test for.

I had a similar condition on an E30 BMW, I had an extended crank after it sat for a while. My injectors were leaking down into the intake while is sat hot. Replaced all 6, upgraded size at the same time, and never had the problem since.
