I called the dealer to confirm they were open to the idea of looking at and fixing my car if SOA paid for it, and that they were familiar with the issue. Two of the other dealers in my area were not. Once I had a dealer I thought was worth going to, I called SOA and opened a ticket. I'd already verified that the welds were broken, so I knew they'd find them on inspection. Smooth sailing from there on, pretty much. When the weld broke again, I told them what had happened, showed pictures, and asked for a bead to be welded across the inside bracket-firewall seam. I brought the car to them without the dash to save their time (you can drive with the dash entirely absent from the car, I just hooked up the gauge cluster to see how fast I was going and really really hoped I wouldn't need the air bags). If you're in the STL area and want a dealer instead of a welder, I worked with Dean Team Subaru and VW. I highly recommend their service department. If you want a welder, PM me and I'll send you the guy I'd go to if I had to do the whole thing over again. To me in hindsight, $100 would have been worth not having to do the trip to the dealer twice and spending the days without my car. |

There is some good information in this thread, but there is also a lot of fluff and non-productive rubbish. I'm going to lock it, but leave it in the forum so that others can search for it in the future.
I believe we have run the course with this thread. |

So, I've heard from the masses on the quality of moderation in this thread and other various armchair quarterbacking.
I will open the thread again, however any personal attack, baiting, flaming, or general malaise will be dealt with immediately. I will use the point system as it was intended and we'll see what happens. |

1) Subaru originally claims they know nothing about the issue and dealerships deny claim of any fault. 2) Lawsuit gets launched earlier this year 3) Subaru suddenly starts fixing cars as good will gestures after the suit launches 4) Subaru seeks to have claim dismissed....probably not going to happen. I'm glad they are owning up to everything. I guess all it took was enough voices and several lawyers to make it happen. I've said it once and I'll say it again, I'm not in it for the money and if I do get a dime, I will give it to charity. I want this issue fixed and guess what...it's NOW getting fixed. It's amazing how this all works. |

Just a thought...since this doesn't really involve any parts that would be ordered by the masses, it's a repair to older/out of warranty cars, could it be that 'Subaru' (dealers or hq) didn't know about it? Maybe it wasn't a 'screw the customers' issue but more about knowing about it? IMHO - if that's the case, the nhtsa filing would have handled it w/o lawyers. Figure a couple of hundred dealers, customer service people. Could it be that they really didn't 'share' the onesy/twoesys they got? Just saying ... Since they've been good with service in my experience.

I have an sti and my clutch master cylinder only squeaks after my commute and the clutch fluid is warm. It don't happen in the morning or on very really cold days. It been about 40 degrees and after clutch fluid gets hot the clutch master cylinder squeaks again. Not the same issue but figured I would put it out there.

what I was saying is I think if more complained to Subaru or highway safety group, Subaru would be handling anyway. Admittedly, I view these class action lawyers as lower than scum sucking parasites, but I guess we'll never know. Army, will your lawyer dude drop it now that it's being handled? Or is money the factor now....

I'm gonna sue Subaru because sometimes my back itches when I'm driving and I don't like that.

update**i just checked for weld issues and after replacing wiper cowl, I didn't notice anything :/
BUT...I was not going to check the internal ones by removing the dash. I have another appointment with the dealer on Monday since the 326$ I wasted did not fix a damn thing. Going to ask for a refund since the items I paid were not reason for the repair and did not resolve the squeaky clutch issue. we will see....I will keep you guys and girls posted. |

Mine is in the shop at Subaru Las Vegas for this issue. Really awesome tech there said he has seen it before so ... I'm hoping they will cover it [they did end up covering it, likely because--and they're not necessarily admitting it but--it is a manufacturer defect]. It's fully stock and I'm an easy driver.
The problem is scary because I'm not a car guy but to hear the cracking sound when I release the clutch is horrifying. I love my wrx and I'm glad Subaru has heard me out (I contacted Subaru of America after researching the issue and they were very quick about having me get it to a dealership), and I'm glad I have a good dealership a few hours away. I lucked out and got racing pedals for Xmas too!!!! My old rubber covers were tattered and falling off. UPDATE (1/3/14): This is week two in the shop. The repair takes a long while so I hope this doesn't happen to anyone who doesn't have access to another car. Subaru is covering the repair, which is VERY nice. I'm glad I wasn't the first person to have this issue because to pay for a repair that significant would be quite the hardship. Last edited by n900mixalot; 01-04-2014 at 05:03 PM. |

Update: two months since a dealer in VA said it was my clutch pedal assembly and SOA covered the repair I started hearing the creaking noise. Called SOA and had me take it to a new dealer since I now live in WI. The dealer here new exactly what it was. They right away said it was the welds. After a few phone calls between the dealer SOA and I, SOA is going to cover the coast of the repair (re weld or whatever they do). SOA was very helpful along with the dealer (sommers subaru). Will have the car back either tomorrow or the following day.
