Official RS-T Water Injection thread
Im thinking about it, hot summer and cat piss Cali 91 doesnt go over well at 15psi

I've been pondering these as well. My only concern is finding a tuner who knows how to tune with them installed. It basically allows you to run tuned as if you had higher octane fuel. The draw back is running tuned to the edge with the WI and you run out of H2O or whatever your mix is and boom!

I really wanna try to just make my on DIY setup, but that still wouldn't solve the tuning issues. If you just had an indicator light as to when the fluid level in the jug was low or empty you could just not beat on your car then and it should be fine. This is assuming it was only spraying when under boost and such.

It has always been my impression that WI should be used as preventative medicine and doesn't provide HP per se. Since it does allow for more threshold for boost and advance people use it to add HP. But I just don't think it's a good way to get HP.
Can't you get any toluene Kaos? or some race fuel.. Even us small Canadian towns carry race fuel just a bit more expensive then regular... like double... |

I agree with HOK.
Using water injection as a mechanism to make MORE power is not safe in my book. If your going to use it to have a safer setup, then fine. But, what happens if the water level in the tank went dry. Say goodbye to your motor..... My roomate was running the Aquamist 2D kit on his Stage III A4...tuff to get working correctly I think. Plus, it isn't that cheap. Graham |

any details on his 2D kit? what it has over the others, and if you know where he got it from?
Im using it just to be safe during the summer while Im on boost, or during track days on boost (Id have it switch on at 12psi) so that everything runs smooth and cool. |

Water injection is REALLY good, but ONLY if you have the ability to play with your timing (and to some degree fuel maps to take full advantage of the system). Injected water both cools the intake charge (by a huge amount) but it also acts as a buffer for any spontaneous flame fronts (prevents detonation). You can run much more agressive timing curves and higher boost levels (assuming you don't run your turbo out of it's efficiency range) which WILL yield more power. A good example is a local guy in Colorado named Pat Mcrath. He runs close to 450 wheel horsepower out of his supercharged Ford Tarus SHO on a COMPLETELY STOCK MOTOR, some of you may know these taurus motors, but they are really not the strongest things out there. The only detonation safeguard he has is his aquamist kit.... some of you may ask about his longevity.... he did his first dyno pulls over 4 years ago and the car is still running just fine. One way to quell the fears over running out of water is to simply kipe a float type fuel sending unit off a junkyard vehicle and place it in your water tank and rig the thing to an autometer fuel gauge and place in water tank. Aquamist makes 2 types of systems, the cheaper one which simply delivers a set amount of water at all times, and the second system that uses a MAP sensor and several controls. This system allows you to set how many lbs of boost the water begins spraying at, and allows you to set a ramp angle so as more boost is delivered so is more water. This system works extremely well with electronic boost controllers, when not running the WI system simply run conservative amounts of boost, when the WI is armed run as much boost as your motor will take with the WI to keep detonation at bay at higher boost levels. Things get really fun when you get a standalone system that allows for 2 separate fuel and timing maps, with this type of standalone simply get the cheaper water injection kit and dyno tune the car with a normal map and one map with very agressive timing. The benefits of water injection are even greater when you start mixing things like methanol in your water tank. Not only will the increased deltaH of the methanol suck more heat out of your intake charge, but will also raise the effective octane of your fuel. One benefit of WI and separate timing maps over race fuel and separate timing maps is that it allows for SAFER more agressive tuning. If you run race gas and an agressive timing map you have to make sure that absolutely every last drop of the 91 octane pee fuel is purged from your fuel system before firing the car up with the race gas and race maps. Yes, in the end a dedicated race fuel map will always allow for higher power levels, but on a daily driven car where it is nowhere close to practical to purge the fuel system before and after every track day it will allow some suprisignly high boost levels and timing maps. BTW I keep mentioning aquamist because they have the most consistent metering of just how much water is flowing out of any system on the market, they also have the highest line pressure (better water atomization, and at high boost levels the boost itself isn't cramming the water back into the water line with no actual water getting delivered).

Im thinking about getting the 2D kit,
granted my TEC has an output to control it so I could use the other kit, but Id rather keep it for something else. |
