Outback Sport AT 60K Service Tranny/Diff Fluid Change Questions

Been looking around the forums and AT info is tough to find. What I've come up with so far is that the AT ('02 Legacy L) holds about 9.8Qts of ATF (Dexron III) but typically you'll only use that much when doing a rebuild.

So the question is how much ATF fluid should I get? I've seen anything from 3.5 to over 5. I figure I'll pick up 5Qts and see how it goes. I'll just use the Dexron III ATF - not doing any performance driving in the Legacy, just tryin' to keep the fiancee's car in good running shape.

Second, I've heard that the front diff fluid is separate from the tranny, unlike in the MT (Am I right here?). I've got the FSMs for the '02 the '04 Impreza line, so I'm using them as loose guides since I've got an '02 Legacy and an '05 Impreza. (The 4EAT should be the same in the '02 Legacy as in the Impreza, right?) So looking at this, it looks like I use ~1.2Qts for the front diff, is it the same 85w-90 fluid as the rear diff uses? Also, Autozone has 80w-90 listed as the diff fluid for many of the Subarus that the manual says 85w-90 for, does it make much of a difference or do I need to hunt for 85w-90 (the couple stores around here I looked in didn't carry it)?

And last question, is there a seperate center diff that I need to change fluid in during a 30K/60K service? I haven't seen one mentioned in either manuals.

Thanks!

No input on even any part of these questions?

Well, I've gone ahead and picked up 5Qts of Dexron III ATF and some Valvoline 80w-90 for the diffs. Hopefully that all works out.

One other question, what is Three Bond 1105? It's called a Fluid Packing in the FSM. Is it some type of threadlock or antiseize? Is it necessary?

Just pick up a tube of Permatex "thread sealant with teflon" from your local autoparts store and put some on the threads of the differential drain plug. The tranny drain plug probably uses a crush washer so you don't need to seal the threads. If you're feeling special, you can get the high-temperature thread sealant with teflon.

Just follow what the manual says to use for the front and rear differential gear oil. As for the center differential, that is actually lubricated by the ATF, that's why Subarus take more ATF than many cars their size. All this info was in my owner's manual. As for ATF change, add about 3 qts and then lower your car off ramps or jacks and then add more after checking. As for the ATF drainbolt, make sure to use a new Subaru crush washer. That is pretty much leak proof.

I used a fluid pump, branded as Mityvac but also sold under other names, to drain the transmission through dispstick tube. Somehow, this way you can remove about 6 quarts. After two drains and refills, over 80% of fluid is replaced.

Just get your trans t-tech'd, they disconnect the trans coolant lines and use the trans pump to pump out all of your old fluid so you can't overfill or under fill. Lots of oil change places have this now. Its great, about $100, and you flush out all the old fluid. Also use Mobil 75w-90 both front and rear diffs. If you want you can try to get the oil change place to charge up their t-ech machine with synthetic trans fluid but I change mine often (lots of city driving, stop and go).
