It is probibaly due to the fact that the Cobb shifter uses berrings instead of bushings. This would let more noise transfer through.

Did you modify the metal plate so that the linkage doesn't rub/rattle in 1st, 3rd, and sometimes 5th?
If not do a search for it and you'll find the mod... If you look at that metal plate that holds down the rubber piece, you'll notice that the opening is a perfect rectangle except the top left (where 1st is)... You need to cut that out to make room for where the bar now is... Hope this helps... Tre' |

Congrats on the new shifter.
I have the same. The little noise I think your hearing, is the same as mine. Due to the berring. The bolt that goes through the bearing rattles with tranny vibration. Nothing to be alarmed about. I did notice it get louder when I installed another shift knob. |

Instead of cutting my plate, I bent it upwards to clear it. That way I can return it to stock and have no problems with the dealer if I ever have problems..

I have the same shifter, I also have some noise, but it sounds more like simple vibrating metal, only at higher revs...I think it is the little bearings shaking a bit. Doesn't really bother me, though.

For those of you guys that say you have this shifter, how do you like it? I mean is it notchy like they say the Kartboy is or smooth? How does it compare to other short shift kits you've driven? I think that is one of the next things on my list, that's why I want to know.

I sell and install the shifters. I had mine bent so it is lower and and closer to my leg. It also decreased the throw by a total of @ 75%. When installing the shifter you MUST regrease everything. Use a good moly grease and lather it on everything! The end ball, bearing, nylon washers, nut....grease it all very well and the noise will be gone! I also recommend a good weighted shift knob to get rid of the notchy feel.

COBB Shifter, Review and Questions...
Well, I got my Cobb Shifter yesterday morning ( thanks JJP), and installed it yesterday afternoon. Very nice piece, good finish,nice quality and very easy to install. It took me a whole 15 min to do it.It seems weird usung a chunk of wood and a hammer on my tranny. The throws are real short, solid and precise, made the stock shifter (which I liked) all that much better.
Now for my question: When I'm in gear and driving, the shifter/tranny/? makes a "shhhhhhhhhhh" noise. Only after I installed the shifter did it do this. Its real quiet, and sounds like static, no its not my stereo I turned it off. Anyone else have this, or know what it is? I greased the shifter, but it sounds like paper rubbing on something spinning, a dull, quiet "shhhhhhhhhhhhh". Did I do something wrong? |

I sent a email to Trey asking if the shifter could be "cut down". I would like to have a shifter that not only has short throws, but also has a shorter physical height. Would this make the shifter REALLY tough to use?

I love mine...I was thinking about cutting it shorter...as long as you know it'll increase the required pressure to get into gears your ok. I replaced my shifter knob with a lighter adjustable one and love it. (the shape is adjustable to fit your hand better)
Being lighter it didn't smooth out the notchy/mechanical feel but then again I really dig that feel. Tre' [This message has been edited by RallyGuy2k (edited March 16, 2001).] |

A little grease on the connection points took care of the bearings rattling for me.
I would also love to shorten the shifts even more, anyone know how withougt making the shifter even shorter ? |

I like the notchiness of the shifter, its very postive and precise, you know when its in gear. As for a heavier shift knob, I'd like a lighter, shorter OMP Suede knob I saw recently.....
