Default Started my Gauge Pod Last Night!

Watching the Koji DIY thread over the past month or so inspired me to take on a project of my own. Keep in mind this is the first time I have fiberglassed ever and am still kinda figuring out what I am doing. Anyways, I never really liked the Defi hood guage pod, so I figured I would make my own. Somthing a little more toned down. All in all I spent $40 on everything so far. I ran out of resin last night and didn't get a chance to glass in the bottom section. Anyways here is what I have so far. Updates coming soon. Oh and as always constructive criticism is always welcome!

I have been watching your Zerosports gauge pod build! That kinda inspired me too! I used 2" ABS plumbing straight unions! It fits a Defi BF gauge PERFECTLY!

Also, just to give everyone a heads up on what I am trying to make the finished product look like. I am going for a mix between

THIS (not carbon obviously)

and THIS

But depending on how much reflection I get on the window from the gauges I might add a slight hood onto the pod as well....

like THIS

I also took it out to the car to see how the angle for the gauge faces are....WOW! I am so stoked. they stare me right in the face, which I am pretty excited about, because I just kinda eyeballed it last night

PM Koji. He's probably used every type of body filler available and I'm sure would be more than happy to help out a fellow DIY'er.

Looks great so far man. In terms of body filler, here are my recommendations:

1. DO NOT USE ANY BONDO PRODUCT.

2. DO NOT USE ANY BONDO PRODUCT.

3. Buy some Evercoat (brand) Rage Extreme (product name) body filler.

4. Buy some Evercoat (brand) Easy Sand (product name) finishing glaze (spot putty).

You've done good work so far. Do not make the mistake of buying a crappy body filler product and effing up the process. The difference between Evercoat and Bondo is like the difference between Tyra Banks in her prime, and going hoggin' at your average sports bar. So basically, it's not even the same league. Sh**t, it's not even the same sport. Bondo products are sh**t. Evercoat products are THE Sh**t.

To give you a practical idea how different they are, I estimate that finishing what you've done so far would take me about 2.5 hours with Evercoat stuff. 7+ with Bondo.

If you were in Seattle and not Portland I'd let you come over and try some out.

Good luck!

I will be ordering some of this tomorrow, where do you get yours from?? I am also going to be finishing the rest of the glassing tomorrow after work. I used Bondo fiberglass resin for the first part...Should I be using something different here as well.
Thanks in advance

I got mine from a place called caswell plating online, but you can get it from a lot of different places. For what you're doing, the bondo brand fiberglass resin is just fine.

Do you think I would be fine with just the rage body filler? not the rage xtreme? I really don't wanna buy a gallon of the stuff right now, and the rage comes in a quart.

For beginner regular rage would be fine.
I ordered my quart from caswell also.
Good stuff. Very easy to sand. I'll update my z/s thread tomorrow with some progress of the sanding.

I agree - regular Rage would be fine for a beginner. Since I had a LOT of relatively complicated stuff to build out I bought a gallon of the extreme.

Yeah! That way it's a perfect fit when it goes back in. I used a dremel and just hacked the crap out of it. haha. I will get pictures of the underside for you.

Awesome! Thanks! Yeah, I just figure I won't be doing anything big for a while so I really don't have a need for a gallon. Thanks guys!
