I took my time with this project as my car is not my daily driver. I'll offer a few tips based on my experience.
I tried Blue Bat's overlays first but failed getting the outer lens overlay on. For the price and the look, I think this is the way to go if you get them professional installed. Having said that, if you take your time painting it will come out seamless.
I used Duplicolors Metalcast Red spray paint and then applied Duplicolors automotive clear over that.
I must of sprayed 10 light to medium coats of each leaving 20 minutes between coats. After drying for 48 hours I wet sanded with 2000 grit sandpaper. I then used a coarse rubbing compound followed by some car polish which I buffed in. They look great and when I tell people I painted them, they think I'm lying.

Really nice, Ive had my light about 90% of the way to where you are for a few weeks, but I havent decided on the final polishing/sanding process. Honestly in a way I kind of like the slightly pink, slightly dull finish the Testors Red and UV clear provided. I taped off the lights, draped a big blanket over the back of the car, traced the lights with a sharpie, then cut out the shapes of the lights through the blanket, then secured it in place (anything to keep from the hassle of removing the lights). I got a little bit of overspray but it wiped right off (I purposely didnt clean anything other than the lights, paint didnt stick to the dust on the car). My car is white so the red lights look really good, Ill post pics soon.

This will look nice for a while, but without using high quality automotive paints and clear, it will fade in no time, not to mention car wax will eat it up....

Wow guys 9000 views later. Thanks for all the compliments. I am glad I was able to find that paint it and give it a shot. I wonder how many 3gwrx and sti owners have done this to their car

Paint Removal supposedly ok for plastic. Left on once for 5-10 secs and most of the paint wiped off. Then reapplied a very small amount to get off the remaining and then there was sort of a bubbling gurgling noise and the plastic started running like water off the lens.

Any chance of saving it with a bunch of sanding? Or is it gone for good?

Typically 30 min or so. I basically would paint a coat, go upstairs and play some PC, come back an hour later, paint 1 more coat, go back and play PC, come back an hour later, paint it with clear enamel, and then gave it about 3 hours. Threw them on the car and walla.
