re-painting already painted stock wheels
hey guys,
just was wondering...i have already painted my stock wheels gold about 2 years ago..and the paint is just now starting to come off...i was wondering if there was anything specific i need to do different? or can i just spray the same gold over it again without it looking like crap...hahaha also...was thinking bout painting the lug nuts red or blue?? just a thought...i didnt think the red would go bad with gold wheels and white car personally.. Thanks! -Kyle

Just sand off the old the best you can and clean, prime, and paint... It's all about the prep work.

^yep...painted lugs don't turn out so good...they scratch when you tighten or loosen them...although maybe i suck at painting

^ Yeah, the lugs might look cool painted, but they will scratch when you remove/replace the wheels. You could always go to a local craft store and get a paint marker that will closely match the lug's paint color and touch them up if/when this happens. Just a quick, easy fix, and it will probably be hard to notice the touchups (at least less so than the scratches from the lug wrench).

hmm..all i did the first time was clean the wheel, and used this aircraft strip remover and then painted them..could i just get away with that again? or should i probably prime it this time? (not really the painter guru..haha) |

You should try to sand everything off of them. Get them totally stripped down, then prime and paint.
Its true, prep work is key for it to look its best and last longer. |

Normally, you do not need to sand everything off, but you DO need to sand everything enough to make it a rough surface. But since you didnt sand it before you painted them last time, you will need to if you dont want this to happen again. Sand/steel wool every square inch of the surface to be painted. Thats why your paint is coming off in the first place, because you didnt sand last time. The paint needs a CLEAN rough surface to really bond to.
After you sand everything, clean it really well with soapy water and rinse, then you will be set to paint. You dont really need primer, but it cant hurt. This is coming from a guy who has painted many many things, so I do have experience. |

Heres what i did when i repainted my wheels the same color,
buy a bottle of goo gone and just wipe away all the chipping paint this way you dont miss a spot or have certain spots with 2 coats rather then just 1 coat (blotchy paint spots) |

you don't need to sand all of the paint off. and you don't need to prime it unless raw metal is showing. sand it with some 400, and then paint over top, and lay down some clear coat if you really wanna do it right but make sure that it is clean after you sand it

Powerdcoating is pretty nice, I did it to my old 2.5i rims, turned out great...cost around $350 at a normal coating shop.
