Default CA: Any chop shop/garage recommendations in San Diego?

So after being rear ended and sandwiched in stop and go traffic on the highway, insurance is declaring my 05 sti to be totaled. I'm getting the short end of the stick and would like to part my car out completely to get some money back out of my car. I moved out here in June, and rent an apartment in San Diego, so I don't really have any space to part out my car myself. Any recommendations for a shop or personal contact that would be able to do this type of work?

Trying to remove:

- entire engine (motor, intake manifold, injectors)
- transmission (front differential)
- rear differential
- struts and suspension
- exhaust system (downpipe, race pipe, catback exhaust)
- sway bars
- radiator
- brembo brakes and calipers

This list is probably things I can do myself:
- oil heater
- gauges (AEM wideband with O2 sensor, boost)
- seats
- headlights/tail lights
- wheels
- doors
- sound system
- trunk

I'm sad that due to no fault of my own, I lose my beloved sti. Hoping to salvage what I can, and will post in the 'Complete Car Part-Out' Section of the forum shortly.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Here's what you should do. Take your insurance buy back quote. Add 2 grand to it. Sell the whole car for that. You'll move it quick and save yourself a major headache. Pulling this off living in an apartment and paying to have it taken apart and the parts stored is not going to happen.

Thanks, I actually think this approach may save me a whole lot of headache. Just sad to see my baby go. I'll see what I can get out there with my car looking like this.

Thanks again.

Any pictures?

Depending on how bad the car was sandwiched, half that stuff might be no good.

And yeah...living in apartment and parting a car out will not work. Not only due to space, but the length of time it takes to fully part a car out.

pictures posted. The collision in the rear is worse than it seems in the picture, but I'll try to get more pictures when I get my car back from the shop the estimate was done at.

Talk with your insurance company and the tow company who is storing the car. I recently had a vehicle totalled. The insurance company agreed and sent me a letter (email) stating that I could remove specific things from the vehicle. The tow/storage place moved the vehicle out of storage, I removed what was specified and they put it back. It cost me $90 for the move out/back but the stuff removed would have cost me $1000 to buy new again to install on the replacement vehicle.

You're going to want to arrange with the insurance company to remove your brakes and replace them with stock. Whatever else must be called out specifically and not be included in the value of the vehicle by the appraiser.

I have all the room in the world at my house, lift, air tools, no neighbors within earshot or sight. I've parted out a dozen cars. You think going in that you're going to make thousands upon thousands. You won't. You will have to sell absolutely everything including the scrap metal to make anything. Do you have a truck/trailer and sawzall, air hammer or torch to cut up the body for scrap metal? If you don't you will not make enough to even cover the cost of the car. Having no place to work on or store the car? You will end up losing. Parts don't bring what you think they'll bring. You will have to use nasioc, craigslist and ebay. You'll have people change their mind, come with 1/2 the money they agreed to, flake or simply not pay. You will spend an equal amount on postage to ship to what you take in. I'm not just making that up. I kept spreadsheets on all the cars I parted out and the post office literally made as much as I did.

Let the insurance company keep it. Learn from it that modding cars is a losing proposition.

Agreed that it's not worth the hassle. I will most likely try to sell the car as a whole, and with just the engine itself, I think I'll be ok hopefully. Parting it out would be a PITA which I'm simply not looking for at this point. Thanks for the advice.
