Head gasket thickness - Is thicker/thinner more likely to leak?
If you had the choice of a 0.5mm or a 1.5mm head gasket (taking factors such as compression, squish and other related issues out of it), is there a benefit of using a thicker or thinner gasket in terms to sealing strength (given they are installed in the same way ie;torque..
I notice the factory 2.5L sti has a very thin head gasket, installed only about 0.5mm thick and there are several others around which can be bought which are quite thick. Subject is in relation to turbo 2.5L engine. Opinions...........

opinion: I would think a thicker gasket would give you a better seal provided that you maybe up torque spec at least a couple pounds. But a thicker gasket woud also lead me to believe that it might corrode quicker
i would prob go thicker, that is just an opinion as an engineer, i am no mechanic |

The 1.5mm gasket has an extra coating around the combustion sealing area which is beneficial when using used components that might not be perfectly flat.
That being said, we have made more power using the .5mm gasket as opposed to the 1.5mm gasket. Good luck with your project. |
