Default Head gasket thickness - Is thicker/thinner more likely to leak?

If you had the choice of a 0.5mm or a 1.5mm head gasket (taking factors such as compression, squish and other related issues out of it), is there a benefit of using a thicker or thinner gasket in terms to sealing strength (given they are installed in the same way ie;torque..

I notice the factory 2.5L sti has a very thin head gasket, installed only about 0.5mm thick and there are several others around which can be bought which are quite thick.
Subject is in relation to turbo 2.5L engine.

Opinions...........

opinion: I would think a thicker gasket would give you a better seal provided that you maybe up torque spec at least a couple pounds. But a thicker gasket woud also lead me to believe that it might corrode quicker

i would prob go thicker, that is just an opinion as an engineer, i am no mechanic

The 1.5mm gasket has an extra coating around the combustion sealing area which is beneficial when using used components that might not be perfectly flat.

That being said, we have made more power using the .5mm gasket as opposed to the 1.5mm gasket.

Good luck with your project.

Sure. a 1 mm oversized head gasket would lower your compression by about a point. I am actually very interested in doing this. I am trying to lower the compression about a point in a 3.3 liter SVX (turbocharged). Seems like an easy way to go. Especially since I have great stock pistons, rods, and bearings. Only problem is 10:1 compression and boost don't mix too well. My only concern with this modification is the timing belt, which should't be too much of an issue, and the big aluminum intake manifold, which will have to stretch a bit. I was thinking of heating it in the oven, then bolting to the intake. Then once it cools loostening it and bolting it back down. What do you think? I am also thinking of going with a copper gasket. I hear they are pretty good.
