3rd oil change. I wanted to try Pennzoil Ultra for this time around, but I could not find it easily. In haste, I tried Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 with the OEM Blue Subaru filter. This cycle was about 75% highway/25% city driving. I'm pretty easy on the car overall. There were also two autocross events on the oil (8-10 runs).

Looks like the oil did ok, and the highway mileage helps, but I would probably keep the intervals short regardless of what Blackstone says.

The insolubles are amazing at .1% with the OEM Honeywell blue can of death. Don't let the Honeywell haters and Framophobes see this. You should cut it open and say the media is crap and the filter will assplode because of cardboard end caps.

Say, what was that second OCI oil, sample date 5-10-13? Viscosity looks very good, heck, even out of 30W grade, no?

EDIT: Oh, just found your second OCI post in this thread - Castrol Prof. OE 5W30. Seems very thick, but as you mentioned pricey. But really held up; MSDS says KV100 is 12.1. Thx.

Can of death I definitely like how the OEM filters are doing.

Yeah, I'm probably not going to stick with the Pennzoil Platinum. It did okay, like you said, for this short OCI. I have some Pennzoil Ultra I got for a good deal on closeout. That's in the car for the current fill and will be for the next oil change. We'll see how it looks. If it can stay around 10cSt or higher (not holding my breath though) I may stick with it for a while. If not, I might switch back to the Castrol Edge OE.

Yes, I was very surprised how little it sheared. Availability (VW dealers only it seems) and price are what I don't like.

Tried, they wont give it out a PDS.

Anyway, finally sent my sample in.
2013 WRX STI
Subaru Synthetic 5w-30 and OEM blue filter.
Majority of the mileage this car gets is on highway. Two trips a day, 25 miles each trip. I cruise at 80-85mph, RPM at 3k-3.5k.
Car is STOCK

Another stellar insolubles number with the Subaru Blue Can of Death. I don't like the copper though. Your driving conditions should be easy on the oil. I would do another short interval and uoa.

Did you refill with Subaru oil?

Not worried about the copper, normal for the STi early in motor life. If it was a turbo that is failing, I hope I'd notice it through sound or a slower spool.

An explanation for good copper numbers on the WRXs is the lack of the copper lined oil cooler on the 08+ models. STi has always had them.

Penn Ultra 5w-30 is current fill. The GF-5 Subaru Oil is OK, I wouldn't mind using it again, but I got Ultra for basically free

Post #3 in your first link FTW!

http://www.iwsti.com/forums/2-5-lite...-2011-sti.html

Seriously, different oils do react with the oil cooler differently and some of the copper leaches from the oil cooler into the oil. If you're in the triple digits again I would probably change oils. See my early GC uoa's from my FXT which also has an oil cooler.

It's probably too early to freak out, but you can find high copper Subaru turbo uoa's on some of the '08/'09 turbo stop sale cars in old bitog uoa's.

I finally got my UOA from Blackstone on the AMSOIL Euro Full-SAPS 5w40.

Here you go:

Here are the specs for the oil:

http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-produc...?code=EFMQT-EA

I included a TBN just for you GPShumway

The 6/1/13 Report was for the AMSOIL EURO 5w30, which I'd already posted in this thread.

Great uoa! With that TBN and the low wear metals, I would be comfortable running this to 7,500 miles. Although the viscosity did drop to a 30 grade, it's starts out as a thin 40 grade anyway at 13.6.

Aww, 3.8 TBN just for me? You shouldn't have...

A very good report, as expected. Amsoil Euro is a bit thinner, and it seems slightly less shear stable than RT6, but an excellent choice for a turbo EJ none the less. Are you sticking with it and extending the OCI? No reason not to.

Next time do a KV40 measurement to see how the viscosity index holds up...

I'm pretty happy with how the oil held up. I replaced it with the same oil, so we'll see how the engine does after running this for a while.

I'm sure I can probably swing that. I will likely run it out to 6,000 or 6500 this time. Baby steps

Here's my 3rd UOA. This is a longer 5200 mile run on the Subaru 5w30 synthetic.

I was expecting worse fuel dilution, worse viscosity and worse TBN, but they all improved.

The only thing that got worse was silver, but everything else improved. I'd love to know where that silver is coming from. Probably bearings, but all the other minor wear metals zeroed out. ???

Make-up oil was 2/3 quart of Rotella T6, and this run included about 1600 miles round-trip to West Texas and driving around Big Bend.

That explains the viscosity, and the TBN. RT6 is stout stuff. The long highway trip helps too, highway driving is generally very easy on oil and the engine.

Even considering the RT6 top-up the Subaru syn seems to have done pretty well. Maybe buy an extra quart for top-up this time.

+1. At what point was the RT6 added?

Bummer. Looks like some pretty serious issues. Get yourself to a good engine shop soon. Got an oil pressure gauge? If not, put aa temporary one in as soon as you can if possible.

there's nothing wrong aside from leaky valve seals. I ran it dry on a few hard corners over the summer so that's where the metals came from. I was worried about fuel/coolant which there isn't any. That report is actually really good for a engine ive beat the piss out of for 240k miles..

He means API SM certification level. The current level is SN, was the bottle on the shelf for a long time? If you still have the bottle, check the back, the API "donut" will show the cert level.

The only thing I see which would indicate this is the old SM version is the slightly low viscosity, it sheared to 30wt. I won't claim to be expert on the UOA differences between the old and new versions, but this looks like the new one to me.

Looks like a pretty good report, though there's still a fair amount of noise from the factory fill (silicon, copper, moly).

Good job leaving the factory fill in for 5k. Most of us get obsessive and change it. This UOA says there is little to fear other than low viscosity.

^^You are probably right. I thought the SN version was suppose to be a little more resistant to sheering but after looking around at a couple of UOA on BITOG it appears to be inline w/ other SN oil samples.

Yea, the SN version is better than the SM version, but it's still not as shear stable as RT6 or TDT. The other factor here is the factory oil at 8 cSt, since you can only drain ~90% of the oil out of the engine, the remaining factory fill is thinning the M1 0w40.
